Sunderland v Chelsea Preview, Capital One Cup Quarter Final, Tuesday 17th December 2013

Although Sunderland haven’t had any great results recently they are still playing a lot better under new manager Gus Poyet that their last manager Paulo Di Canio, and influential Sunderland player Lee Cattermole has been quick to back the new man in recent news. With some huge signs of improvement since Poyet has taken over we have seen them give Chelsea a run for their money but sadly still losing 4 – 3 after 90 minutes. Then there was the wins over local rivals Newcastle United, Southampton who are playing exceptional football and then the incredible shock win over Manchester City.

Chelsea may be winning a majority of their games right now but they are not being totally convincing with it. yeah they had a great result against Southampton with beating them with ease then just managed a win against struggling Sunderland with the game ending with seven goals as Chelsea won 4-3. Then came the defeat away to Stoke City and I can imagine ex Chelsea manager Mark Hughes was buzzing after pulling that one off which no doubt eased off the relegation pressures with now being a few points away with some breathing space. the last week has seen another two victories with the first starting in the Champions League at home to Steaua Bucharest with an early goal and then a worrying win at home to relegation battling Crystal Palace.

Sunderland v Chelsea Team News

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland only have a couple of injury woes with the first being Irish goalkeeper Keiren Westwood who has played 10 games this season but injured his shoulder in training before playing against Stoke City at the end of November. The other is Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar who has only played 3 games this season before injuring his hip, but he is due back late this week and maybe available for selection again before Christmas.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea’s only long term injury is the Dutchman Marco can Ginkel who suffered a knee ligament injury back in September and will unlikely be seen again until next season. We also have Ryan Bertrand missing with a knee injury at the end of November and no new news regarding his return to action although the young defender has only played once this season. More importantly though Chelsea are without center back Gary Cahill for this match with a thigh strain and will unlikely play again until after Christmas. Although he is due back around the 21st I am not sure if he will be rushed back into action.

Sunderland v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

In recent years we have seen Chelsea completely dominate Sunderland with the Wearside clubs last win back in 2010 where Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck grabbed the winner in a 3 – 0 away win. Before that the last recorded Sunderland victory was in 2001 which is an incredible feat by Chelsea. In total we have seen 105 games played by these two with Chelsea winning 53 to Sunderland’s 34 as well as 18 draws. In those 53 wins Chelsea have won 18 of them as away games so are no strangers beating their opponents at home or away.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In those 105 games played we have seen a total of 354 goals scored which gives us a great goals per game average of 3.37 which will hopefully show that on Tuesday we could see another goal rout. In recent weeks these two met with Chelsea once more away from home and the game ended 4 – 3 in Chelsea’s favor.

Sunderland v Chelsea Recent Form (Left to Right)

Sunderland: D L L D L

Chelsea: W W L W W

Chelsea are obviously the team in better form here and will also have the clear advantage for this game, although I would like to add the Sunderland are looking a lot better under new management and have been unlucky in some of their loses in recent weeks.

Sunderland v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market.

Sunderland played well in their recent defeat at home to Chelsea as the game ended 4-3 but we have to consider their chances here and bookmakers are not convinced The Black Cats can pull it off with the best odds coming in @ 11/2 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

The Draw is a better option for those potentially looking to back Sunderland yet I still feel it is unlikely come Tuesday. The best odds are coming in @ 7/2 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers).

Chelsea are considered clear favourites for this match by bookmakers with already beating Sunderland at their own ground last week. The best odds are currently coming in @ 4/7 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Sunderland v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Well we can say one thing, if the game starts and ends much like last weeks encounter then we could see a very exciting game on Tuesday. Usually the top sides play a weaker side in this competition but in recent years we have seen different and with Jose Mourinho recently saying Chelsea could win nothing this year I foresee a good Chelsea line up in this years Capital One Cup Quarter Final.

That said we need to start looking into possible predictions for this game on Tuesday. Sunderland played well in their last encounter and even went 1 – 0 up before Frank Lampard grabbed an equalizer 3 minutes later and with the way Sunderland are improving we could potentially see an upset on Tuesday. But is it enough to risk putting money on Sunderland to grab that unexpected win? Not for me, especially as Chelsea are playing well enough to win games to keep the pressure on Arsenal in the league.

So my first prediction comes with both teams to score and for Chelsea to win the game, which worked well in their last encounter at the beginning of December. The other will be for Eden Hazard to score and for Chelsea to win the game which has better odds that just the young Belgium to score ANYTIME during the match.
