Liverpool v Stoke City Preview, Premiership, Saturday 17th August 2013

The pressure will certainly be on Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers and his side as the fans will expect to win something this season and after a very impressive pre-season where Liverpool won four of their five games the fans will expect victory.

Stoke City also had a decent pre-season winning three of their four games, but with manager Mark Hughes having not really brought any significant names during the summer transfer period it does look likely that Stoke City will again struggle to finish much higher than they did last season.

Liverpool v Stoke City Team News

Liverpool Team News:

The Luis Suarez continue’s to dominate the headlines and with Liverpool seemingly un-willing to sell the player to rivals Arsenal it does look like Suarez will have to be content with training with the reserves until a big european club come to the rescue.

Brendan Rogers has been quite busy during the summer transfer market and has brought in goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo and Luis Alberto from Sevilla. He has also managed to secure the services of Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City and the squad definitely looks to have the strength and depth to challenge for major honours this season.

Striker Daniel Sturridge has been out recovering from injury and has not played any part of the pre-season warmup, but has returned to training and could possibly feature in the starting lineup.

Stoke City Team News:

No real high profile names have been brought into the squad by manager Mark Hughes and with players like Rory Delap, Mathew Upson and Michael Owen now having left the club I can only see Stoke City struggling this season as even with the arrival of Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven, it does seem Stoke City need a miracle to finish anywhere close to the top ten.

Who Has The Advantage?

The two clubs have met each other on 90 previous occasions and from those games Liverpool have won 45, Stoke City have won 18 and there has been 27 draws. From the 5 recent meetings between the two clubs, we see from the data in our head to head statistics table above that Liverpool have a slight advantage having won 2, compared to Stoke City having won just 1.

The remaining 2 games have both finished all square.

Average Goals Per Game?

219 goals have burst the nets from the previous 90 matches played between the two sides which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.43 which indicates that this game on saturday afternoon should see a couple of goals go in.

Liverpool v Stoke City Recent Form

Liverpool: W W W W L

Stoke City: D L W W W

Liverpool have a slight advantage on the recent form stats, having won 4 of their last 5 games played. Stoke City haven’t done that badly either having won 3 of their last 5 played.

Both sides have suffered 1 defeat each during those last 5 matches with Liverpool losing their previous game 1-0 at home to Celtic and Stoke City losing their game back on the 25th of June 0-2 away against Houston Dynamo.

Liverpool v Stoke City Match Betting Odds Market.

Liverpool as you would expect, have been priced up as the clear odds on favourites to win this game on saturday afternoon with the online bookmakers currently offering a best price of just 4/9 with Ladbrokes – £30 Free Bets for New Customers for Brendan Rogers’ side to open their new campaign with a victory.

The Draw has happened more times than Stoke City have won, so it might be worth having a small saver on both teams to share the spoils in this one which can be backed at a current best price of 7/2 with Sky Bet – £10 Free Bets No Deposit Required for New Customers.

Stoke City head into this game having won their last three pre-season friendly matches on the bounce and haven’t done that bad against Liverpool at Anfield over recent years. However I find it difficult to see Mark Hughes’ side winning this game with the current squad he has available and their current best price of 8/1 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets for New Customers reflects their chances in my opinion.

Liverpool v Stoke City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

The good news for Liverpool fans is that striker Daniel Sturridge does look likely to start this game and that is a major plus for the chances of Brendan Rogers’ side winning this game and with a very productive pre-season which only saw one defeat against Celtic last time out I would expect Liverpool fans to be the ones celebrating come saturday afternoon.

Stoke City have always been a tough and physical side to beat and will be dangerous from set-pieces with their height, but I just can’t see this current squad being able to cope for the whole 90 minutes and although they could get one during the game, I don’t think it’s going to be enough to stop Liverpool winning.

Although the price of Liverpool is a bit on the short side, I can certainly see some big punters getting on it as it does look like a guaranteed return for me, but the goals market could be the safer place to concentrate on here as with the goal stats suggesting the game to see at least a couple, there should be plenty of value to be had.
