Manchester United v Liverpool Preview, Europa League, Last 16, Thursday 17th March 2016

Manchester United are having another poor season, but this tournament does represent them with a chance to finish the season on a high note and win a significant trophy, however with a 2-0 defeat in the 1st leg at Anfield they really do have a mountain to climb and with a number of their key players still missing through injury, I don’t honestly fancy their chances if im honest.

Liverpool are in pole position to advance through to the quarter finals of the tournament after their impressive 2-0 1st leg victory in front of their home fans and with Daniel Sturridge back from injury and scoring goals for his side they obviously have a big chance of going all the way and for me the visitors should prove too strong for a weakened United side come Thursday night in Manchester.

Manchester United Team News:

The hosts continue to be without Valencia, Keane, Rooney, Shaw and Ashley Young as they continue to receive treatment for respective injury related problems. Borthwick-Jackson and Phil Jones are also carrying minor knocks and will both have to under take a late fitness test to see if they can be involved.

The United attack will most likely consist of Martial and Depay with Mata, Lingard and Schweinsteiger providing the support in behind.

Liverpool Team News:

The visitors have almost a full squad available but will be without the services of Gomez, Ings and Lucas as they continue to receive treatment for respective injury related problems. Skrtel is nursing a knock and will under take a late fitness test, but he should be passed fit to take his place in the heart of the Liverpool defence.

The attack will most likely consist of Daniel Sturridge or Christain Benteke leading the attack up front with support in behind being provided by Roberto Frimino, Adam Lallana and Phillipe Coutinho.

Manchester United v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

Thursday night’s match from Old Trafford Stadium will become the 169th meeting between the two clubs over the years. Manchester United have managed 67 victories overall with 25 of those having came away from home, where as Liverpool have managed to secure 56 victories overall of which 16 of those have came away from home.

Our head to head statistics table below shows the last five matches played between the two clubs and as we can see Manchester United have a clear advantage in recent meetings having won an impressive four times, compared to Liverpool having won just the once.

209 of those Goals have been scored in the 83 matches played between the two clubs at Old Trafford Stadium, which generates us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.52.

Both sets of data indicate that this game is likely to see between 2 or 3 goals scored on Thursday night and betting markets such as both teams to score and total match goals 2 or 3 look the best choices for this one.

Manchester United v Liverpool Match Betting Odds Market

Manchester United are in big danger of being eliminated from this tournament unless they can turn around that 2-0 1st leg score-line and for me I just don’t see them having the squad to do so what with a number of their key players injured so it does surprise me to see the online bookmakers having them as the clear favourites to win this game at a current best price of 13/8 with SkyBet – DeReceive £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers Registering an Account.

The Draw has not happened in any of the previous five meetings between the two clubs, but I can see this game having a strong possibility of finishing all square come the full time whistle and this does look value at a current best price of 12/5 with BetFred – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account.

Liverpool are enjoying a good run of form lately, but I would expect them to try and protect their 2-0 lead from the first leg and defend quite deep in this game. However this does provide them with a chance of catching United on the counter attack and their  best price of 19/10 with Paddy Power – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account. , also looks good value for this game.

Manchester United v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Manchester United have it all to do here and as I have previously said in this preview, I just don’t see them having the squad available to turn around that 2-0 defeat picked up in the 1st leg at Anfield.

If they had the likes of Rooney, Young and Valencia fit and available to play then I could of quite possibly seen them just eding the win on Thursday night, but without them, unfortunately their fate looks sealed.

Liverpool seem to be going from strength to strength and with Daniel Sturridge now back in the fold and getting his name on the score-sheet things are starting to look a lot better for all Liverpool fans and if they can keep their key players fit for the rest of the season I can certainly see them going all the way in this tournament.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip will be for the game to contain Under 2.5 Goals as I am expecting Liverpool to defend quite deep and use the counter attack to hit United on the break when the situation arises.

Liverpool have a solid defence and with Skrtel looking likely to pass his late fitness test and be involved in this game, then I can’t see United scoring more than one goal on Thursday night, if at all any.

My First Goalscorer Tip is going to be for the game to see No Goalscorer score the first goal of the match as this looks great odds available with Coral, in what I feel is a game that is going to see very little goal action.
