Stoke City v Arsenal Preview, Premiership, Sunday 17th January 2016.

This season has been one of the best I have ever witnessed a Stoke City side play with them sitting in an impressive 7th position in the Premiership and just two points away from the likes of Manchester United. Not only that but they are only a few points away from being in a European position and if they manage to keep playing as they do come the end of the season it would be a strange feeling seeing the likes of Stoke City in the Champions League! That said they have a tough game on Sunday against the league leaders Arsenal, and to be honest even a draw would be an incredible result for Mark Hughes side with the last time they met seeing Arsenal win at home 2 – 0.

Arsenal threw away a good chance of keeping a two point lead over Leicester City during the week when they traveled to Liverpool and ended the game with just a point. The game had everything it was promised to be with end to end football and a hat-full of enjoyable goals. Everything a neutral could hope for in this match that ended 3 – 3 on the night. Arsenal will be favourites for the win on Sunday and I can imagine anything else would see them hand over the lead to Leicester City as they face Aston Villa. It’s a tough game at home to Chelsea after that and then another home fixture but this time in the FA Cup 4th round to Championship side Burnley.

Stoke City Team News:

Stoke City should still be without their exciting winger Xherdan Shaqiri who is still revovering from a hamstring issue while also Geoff Cameron is unavailable due to his ankle. Marko Arnautovic was substituted against Norwich after complaining about a tight hamstring but should be fit to play Arsenal come Sunday.

Arsenal Team News:

Potentially exciting news for Arsenal fans as they could very well be welcoming back Alexis Sanchez after a long layoff due to his hamstring and we also see that new signing Mohamed Elneny could be on the bench and maybe make his debut at some point. Arsenal are still missing the usual David Ospina (knock), Tomas Rosicky (knee), Danny Welbeck (knee), Jack Wilshere (fibula fracture), Coquelin (knee ligaments) and Santi Cazorla (knee ligaments).

Stoke City v Arsenal Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we can see it is Stoke City who are a potential boogie side for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal with two wins out of the five. Where as although Arsenal are out on top with three wins we can clearly see they struggle away from home to Mark Hughes side. In total we have 91 games played with Arsenal the obvious winners with 46 victories. Stoke City have won 25 with 20 of these at their own ground. the two have also drawn 20 times over the years, yet none in the last five games played.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 91 games played out between the two clubs we have seen a total of 228 goals scored. This is going to give us an average of 2.5 goals per game and looking at the above you clearly need to put anything over this amount. The below option is a good choice.

Stoke City v Arsenal Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Stoke City: W L L W W

Arsenal: W W W L W

Although Stoke City are exceptional this season it is still Arsenal who are in the better form with them currently sitting top of the league. That could all change come Sunday however with Leicester City the likely winners against Aston Villa, and of course Arsenal always seeming to struggle at Stoke City’s ground.

Stoke City have had the better results at home against Arsenal in recent seasons and are of course in with a good chance of repeating that come Sunday, yet the best odds on them doing so don’t see them as favourites. Stoke City v Arsenal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premiership action on Sunday can be seen live at Britannia Stadium where Stoke City have set up a decent fortress over the years against the likes of Arsenal. Arsene Wenger’s last win at this stadium was over five years ago now so as you can image Stoke City are, and should be confident of grabbing a point or three come Sunday afternoon. Another reason to think this is because Stoke City are exceptional this season with them currently in 7th position in the league just three points off of a Europa League spot, something that would be an incredible achievement if the club do manage to finish in a European competition finish.

Arsenal are currently joint top with Leicester City coming into this game, although the Foxes do play a day before on Saturday against bottom side Aston Villa, and to be honest really should win the game even though they are away from home. If Leicester City do win and Arsenal fail to earn a win then they will then be two points behind although I can’t really see Leicester City keeping it up for much longer, regardless of how good their season has been. Stoke City on the other hand could see themselves climb the table above Manchester United who themselves face a tough away battle against bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

My predictions for this game does tend to favour that of Arsenal, as surely they should beat a team such as Stoke City regardless of the form they are in. Anyway that really isn’t a safe bet for me so I am going to go with two or three goals scored on the day as my banker bet. Oliver Giroud has once again been on the score sheet with banging in a couple of goals midweek against Liverpool, but to grab another brace is surely not on the cards against the tough Stoke City. So to play it safe in this aspect and still select the Frenchman to score I am now going to back him as an anytime goalscorer which is still giving positive odds at least.
