Southampton v Aston Villa Preview, Premiership, Saturday 16th May 2015.

Southampton in recent weeks have blown their chances of reaching the Champions League qualification places having lost three, drawn one and won once in their last five Premiership fixtures, with the way Southampton are playing at the moment the chances are they could lose this game against Aston Villa and will no doubt come out losers away from home at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City next time out.

This would see the club likely to miss out on the Europa League stage with teams like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur taking the places even though they would probably rather go without the extra games of such an non-respected competition, where as a club like Southampton would welcome the chance to play in Europe.

However for Southampton to be playing in Europe next season they will need to win at least once in their final two games and also hope Spurs fail to win either of their two final games.

Aston Villa are still not out of the relegation fight yet with only four points between them and eighteenth placed Hull City, yet I cannot see Hull City beating Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United who are their final opponents.

A win here on Saturday lunchtime is more than achievable for Tim Sherwood’s men who have won four out of their last five Premier League fixtures and with wins against Spurs, Liverpool, Everton and West ham United to note I do personally feel Villa could secure their place in the next years Premiership fixture list as the win is going to be unlikely away from home against Arsenal in their final game of the season.

Southampton Team News:

Southampton have welcomed back Jay Rodriguez (crucial knee ligament) and Emmanuel Mayuka (groin) to training this week and it has been some time for Rodriguez who has been missing since April of 2014. Fraser Forster (knee) is out for the rest of the season as is Dusan Tadic with a groin strain. Last is Morgan Schneiderlin who has a knee injury and will be back mid May sometime.

Aston Villa Team News:

Aston Villa have three players injured right now and each of them will be out for the remainder of the season. Chris Herd has been out since January with an Achilles tendon tear, while Ciaran Clark suffered a crucial knee ligament injury back in April. Nathan Baker is the last with a knee injury he picked up a few weeks ago.

Southampton v Aston Villa Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we can see it is Southampton who just come out on top with that extra win. The two have drawn twice as well as Aston Villa winning just the once away from home back in 2013. We have 59 meetings recorded with Aston Villa out on top with 22 wins and 20 loses, while also seeing 17 draws over time.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 59 games played out between these two Premiership sides we have seen a total of 149 goals scored. This is going to give us an average of 2.5 goals per game, something that isn’t showing as too accurate here in their last five head to head encounters.

Aston Villa: W W L W W

Southampton were so strong in the first half of the season yet have since then been extremely poor and continued to slide back down the table. Although they are still in a respectable 7th position and fighting for a Europa League place I do have to say it is Aston Villa who are the better team in form right now.

Southampton v Aston Villa Match Betting Odds Market

Southampton are at home for Saturday lunchtimes kick off and are considered as the bookmakers favourites to walk away from the game with all three points. However I do feel it will take something special as they clearly are not in any kind of good form right now. Southampton v Aston Villa Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Premiership lunchtime action on BT Sports 1 High Definition this Saturday will feature Europa League chasing side Southampton, against relegation avoiding in form Aston Villa. This will certainly be an exciting game on Saturday as Southampton are clearly out of sorts right now and must be seen as having very little chance of qualifying for the Europa League if they continue to lose games against sides far below them in the table.

As for form right now we can clearly see Aston Villa know how to turn it on, and the decision to sack Paul Lambert and hire Tim Sherwood proved to be a great one with them now so close to avoiding the drop. The chances of of actually going down are extremely slim as Hull City are unlikely to beat Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester United in their remaining games. Although a win on Saturday against Southampton will secure their place in the Premiership next season.

My predictions for this game on Saturday does in fact favour that of Tim Sherwood’s side as I do see them continuing their good winning form for at least this game against The Saints. I do not see them beating Arsenal however so a win here is a must for Aston Villa I feel. So lets go for a 2 – 1 win for Aston Villa on Saturday, with the other being a score draw which will still not be enough until after the end of the day while awaiting for Hull City’s result against Spurs.
