PSG v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Last 16 1st Leg, Tuesday 16th February 2016.

This could be an easy round for French Champions PSG who come into this 1st leg of the last 16 on the back of an impressive run of games this season. In Ligue 1 they are as expected top of the table, but its how they are doing it right now with them currently on seventy points, a massive twenty four points in front of Monaco who sit in second place.

Another exciting fact is the clubs goal difference, it’s an incredible +51 with them destroying most teams within their division. On Saturday however they were halted somewhat when thirteenth placed Lille managed to withstand the home sides attacking prowess thus holding PSG to a goalless draw. Lille are the fist club to stand up to PSG since way back at the beginning of December when Angers also held them to a draw, yet since then PSG have played seventeen and won all.

Have Chelsea returned to the type of performances seen last season when they dominated the English Premiership? Well with them destroying Newcastle United in the first ten minutes with two quick goals you can’t help but hope they just may of rekindled the type of form that made them champions in the first place. It was only a further eight minutes until Chelsea scored again and went in at half time 3 – 0 up.

In the second half it did calm down somewhat yet on the hour Pedro did manage to slot home for his second goal of the game. Traore also scored for Chelsea with seven minutes later and when you started to think that was all we were expected Andros Townsend fired home a consolation goal for his new club ending the match 5 – 1. It see Chelsea move up into twelfth position and fourteen points off of Manchester City in a Champions League spot.

PSG Team News:

PSG have seen some unrest in the dressing room as of late which has seen Serge Aurier suspended by the club following derogatory remarks about current manager Laurent Blanc and some of his team mates including striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Marco Verratti came on at half time against Lille recently after returning from injury, yet news of him not starting against Chelsea has been reported.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea are without Kurt Zouma who hurt his knee against Manchester United which has also ruled him out for the rest of the season, and what makes maters worse is John Terry had to be substituted after coming off against Newcastle with a hamstring injury. Which leaves Chelsea light at the back meaning Branislav Ivanovic may start as a center back. Nemanja Matic isn’t available as he has to serve a suspension so we should see John Obi Mikel start.

PSG v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five fixtures played against each other we have seen Chelsea come out on top just with that extra win by penalties last year in the International Champions Cup. In total the two clubs have featured against each other of eight occasions with Chelsea winning three and losing the once. Leaving the four remaining games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the eight games played out against each other we have seen a total of 19 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of close to 2.4 goals per game which as you can see above is pretty spot on. I’d play safe for Tuesdays game and go for the below selection.

PSG: D W W W W

Chelsea: W D D W W

As we know Chelsea started this season dreadfully and have only recently started to improve and now are currently twelves games unbeaten. That said PSG are by far the better team in form and now celebrate twenty three games unbeaten with the last being back in November in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

PSG v Chelsea Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

It’s back to Champions League action on Tuesday night when BT Sports Europe set up base in Paris at the beautiful Parc des Princes featuring home side Paris st Germain verses English Champions Chelsea. It will be the 1st Leg of the last sixteen and will no doubt be a very exciting match with a number of goals potentially. PSG are scoring goals for fun (excluding last weekend) and with Chelsea potentially fielding a makeshift back four we could be set for a humiliated unless the visitors do manage to keep it tight.

PSG are flying high in Ligue one with no one anywhere near able to mount a challenge for their league dominance, on top of that the clubs goal difference is something to feat being +51! Knowing that Chelsea are leaking goals I am questioning the clubs abilities to keep out the likes of star strikers Cavani and Ibrahimovic. They also have Angel di Maria who has been in fine form for the club since signing from Manchester United last summer.

Chelsea on the other hand have improved and we did see a champions performance on Sunday against Newcastle United. The club humiliated Newcastle with a 5 – 1 thrashing and the only negative would be the departure of john Terry who suffered a hamstring injury, and also becoming a doubt for Tuesdays fixture in France.

With that performance taken into account it does make you start to believe that Chelsea could start to mount their comeback and fight for a Champions League finish. But to be honest although Manchester City lost at the weekend I can’t see the top four slipping up enough to allow Chelsea a fighting chance of Europe. With their only hope of Champions League football next season relying on them actually going all the way and winning this season.

My predictions for this game is leaning more towards a draw, with a few goals scored in the process. This is based on the fact that both clubs clearly are in some scoring form right now and also the fact that Chelsea can leak goals due to a makeshift defense. So for the first prediction I am going to bank on both teams to score and draw the game. The next I am going for is PSG to win the game, but also for Ibrahimovic to score in the process making the odds go up slightly.
