Arsenal v Liverpool Preview, FA Cup 5th Round, Sunday 16th February 2014

With Arsenal looking to put last weeks hammering by Liverpool behind them they head into this game knowing that a win could lead to their first piece of silverware in far too many years. Arsenal did regather themselves for the battle against last years champions Manchester United and although there were a fair few chances either end the goalless draw seemed a fair result with neither of the sides wanting to lose the game.

Liverpool have been in great form recently and haven’t lost a game since late December when they paid visit to Chelsea and lost the game 2 – 1. With five league wins and two draws since that day Liverpool are now starting to be considered title contenders once more. Last week Liverpool played host to Arsenal and demolished them 5 – 1 much to the shock of Arsene Wenger and every single Arsenal fan alive. But this game is an FA Cup tie so the game could go either way on Sunday.

Arsenal Team News:

Arsenal welcome back midfield maestro Mathieu Flamini after serving a three game suspension but could be set to lose Santi Cazorla due to an illness. With Arsenal still in the Champions League and a game coming up soon Arsene Wenger could be forced to rest a few players with the likes of Giroud and Szczesny being those mentioned. Arsenal are still without Thomas Vermaelen with a knee injury and also Aaron Ramsey with his thigh. New loan signing Kim Kallstrom is also still unfit due to a back issue. Long term injury list still hosts Diaby and Walcott.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool will no doubt play the same team as seen in the last four games, but we could see Glen Johnson and Agger back and available to be picked which could lead to some changes. Liverpool are still however missing Lucas (knee ligaments), Jose Enrique (knee) and Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) who have all been injured for some time.

Arsenal v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

As we can see below with the head to head statistics it is in fact Arsenal who have been the better side in recent years but if we look at the 181 games played in total over the years we can see the Liverpool just pip to the top with 67 wins to Arsenal’s 66. We have also seen 48 draws with 31 of them happening with Liverpool traveling to Arsenals ground.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 181 games played in the past we have seen a total of 499 goals scored which is giving us an average of 2.75 goals per game. That figure would be more like the usual results between these sides although every now and then we see a drumming like last weekends 5 – 1 win by Liverpool.

Arsenal v Liverpool Recent Form (Left to Right)

Arsenal: D L W D W

Liverpool: W W D W W

Arsenal may be higher in the Premiership by 3 points yet it will be Liverpool who are the side in better form right now, especially as they hammered Arsenal 5 – 1 at the weekend. Arsenal also dropped points on Wednesday to last years Champions Manchester United which would of been disappointing due to the current form United are in.

Arsenal v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This Sundays FA Cup 5th round clash looks set to be a very exciting game especially as Arsenal took a complete battering last week away from home to Liverpool. The game ended with Arsenal losing 5 – 1 which was very embarrassing for Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans. This game however could be very different, it doesn’t matter what happened in the recent past as this is an FA Cup tie, an English Competition every club hopes and prays that one day they could win.

Liverpool are in exceptional for right now and are also strengthened by the return of Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger, if they feature in the starting lineup on Sunday is currently unknown. Arsenal themselves are missing some influential players with the likes of Ramsey and Cazorla missing from selection. They will however be pleased to welcome back Flamini which will install some calm into the midfield and bring it back to a stable state.

So lets get down to some predictions for Sundays game, its going to be a tough one to pick out a winner and with Arsenal facing Bayern Munich on Wednesday we could see Arsene Wenger forced to rest some players. This could backfire and we could see Arsenal knocked out of the cup if the home side are not at their best. So I am going for a Liverpool win and a Daniel Sturridge goal in the 90 minutes with the other prediction that of a total goals 2 – 3 exactly.
