Chelsea v Southampton Preview, Premiership, Sunday 15th March 2015.

Chelsea this week suffered a huge loss at the hands of Paris st Germain in the Champions League. Even though the result didn’t end up as a loss, the English league leaders still see exit from the competition due to the away goal rulings. What added more salt to the wound, was that it was ex Chelsea defender David Luiz that took both teams into extra time with a last minute screamer of a header. Chelsea did take the lead again when the two kicked off yet lost the game eventually when Thiago Silva equalised again with only six minutes remaining, ending the game 3 – 3 on aggregate in PSG’s favour. In regards to the Premier League however, Jose Mourinho’s side continue to lead from the top and now have a game in hand over Manchester City while still being five points clear.

Southampton did start returning to winning ways at the beginning of February, yet soon slipped again when losing to Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion on the bounce. March however has been kinder as the 7th places club found victory against in form Crystal Palace at home and even though it would of reinstalled some belief in this side I cannot see them overturning the likes of Chelsea on Sunday. After the Chelsea fixture we do see a kinder run of games for Southampton, with them due to face Burnley, Everton and Hull City in the coming weeks. Southampton maybe in 7th position right now, but we must also remember that between them and Arsenal who are in 3rd, there is only five points in it.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea’s only injury worry right now is that of John Obi Mikel who is suffering from a knee issue. The midfield veteran is however due back next month if his recovery continues to go as planned. Diego Costa has slowed down with his goal scoring antics even though the Spain international still has an impressive collection of seventeen Premiership goals. making him the clubs top overall scorer. Eden Hazard is also having yet another impressive season having scored ten and assisted in six league goals.

Southampton Team News:

Southampton have been suffering with a number of injuries over the last few months which could be put down to why they have dropped down the table somewhat. We see Lloyd Isgrove missing with a knock, while Sam Gallagher is still out due to his knee. We then hame the talented Jay Rodriguez still unavailable with his crucial knee ligament damage and then lastly there is Emmanual Mayuka out with a groin strain.

Chelsea v Southampton Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we see Chelsea just take the lead with that extra win. Meaning they have won twice, drawn twice and lost just the once. In total we have 64 games recorded where Chelsea have won 29 and lost the 18. We then have 17 draws with two of these happening in the last couple of years.

Chelsea: D W W D D

Southampton: W L L D W

Chelsea are the better team in form here even though they have managed to draw three times in their last five games in all competitions. Two of these however were in the Champions League in which Chelsea have now been knocked out of due to the away goal rules. Southampton have been up and down in form recently yet did return back to winning ways against Crystal Palace last week.

The Draw has happened twice in the last five meetings and if Southampton do play well at the Bridge we could possibly see another. The bookmakers do see it as a possibility and I can understand why when looking at these odds. Best of them found here @ 3/1 with Ladbrokes – £25 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

Southampton are within a shout of a possible upset on Sunday although it would require something special. Chelsea would need to have a poor game defensively which isn’t something rare when looking at how easily they can concede sometimes. Chelsea v Southampton Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Premiership action Sunday lunchtime comes to us live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition and features Premier League leaders Chelsea welcoming Southampton to The Bridge. The two clubs who are both playing well this season have already played each other with the game ended as a 1 – 1 draw just after Christmas Day. Chelsea however will not want to drop points this Sunday, and the bookmakers odds suggest that could be the case if Southampton do manage to continue after their recent win.

Both clubs form levels do differ slightly here and of course we do see Chelsea the better team with them winning twice and drawing the three times. One of these victories was the Capital One Cup final at Wembley Stadium where they took apart Tottenham Hotspurs 2 – 0. Two of the three draws were against French side PSG which did see the English club knocked out of the competition by the away goal ruling. Southampton did return to winning ways recently against Crystal Palace, and god knows if that is what they need to continue how they were in the first half of the season.

My predictions for this Premiership fixture will see Chelsea win in both, with one of them being a correct score of some sort. The other I am going for will be for both teams to score in the game and for Chelsea to win. Reasons behind this will be because I know Chelsea are struggling to keep goals out even against the likes of Burnley. So for the first I am going to go for a correct score guess of Chelsea to win 2 – 0 after the ninety minutes.
