Manchester United v Liverpool Preview, Premiership, Sunday 15th January 2017.

Old Trafford will be buzzing come 4 o’clock this Sunday when Manchester United get to host bitter rivals Liverpool. It’ll be a chance for the home side to close the gap to just two points, or the gap could worsen with a Liverpool win as they would jump back up into second place and eight points clear of Jose Mourinho’s side. Which would pretty much spell disaster for Manchester United who are doing all they can to return to their prolific best.

The League Cup win over Hull City at Old Trafford on Tuesday made it fifteen games unbeaten for United in all competitions, with the last loss recorded way back in early November when they met Fenerbahce in the Europa League group stages. A win against Liverpool this Sunday would make it ten games won on the trot and to be honest the home side are the favourites to beat their rivals which would open up the league a considerable amount.

Liverpool’s form has suffered somewhat recently and they will want to get back to winning ways if they are serious about mounting a challenge on winning this seasons Premiership trophy. The last five games show mixed results with them beating Stoke City and then Manchester City, but since then have drawn against struggling side Sunderland, and then Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup. Then they lost on Wednesday to Southampton in the League Cup semi-final 1st leg.

That loss will of hurt even if it is only the League Cup, as chances are the way they are going they could even be knocked out of the FA Cup away from home to Plymouth if they are not careful. After the United game and FA Cup replay they have Swansea City at Anfield which they are favourites for, then it is the 2nd leg of the League Cup which they will need to win by at least three goals. Last of the five is a home tie against current league leaders Chelsea.

Manchester United Team News:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be available for Manchester United this Sunday with the striker missing out against Hull City due to illness. As we know Eric Bailly is away in Africa while on international duty with the Ivory Coast but United should have sufficient cover for the defender who has done well since joining in the Summer. Luke Shaw has returned to training and Marcos Rojo also will need to complete a late fitness test to see if he is available.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool welcome back their captain Jordan Henderson as well as Joel Matip. Both returned to training this week and could both play a part in Sundays game if fully fit. We also see the return of Philippe Coutinho after the midfielder managed to complete half hour in the loss to Southampton recently.

Manchester United v Liverpool Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premiership action this weekend brings us one of the more anticipated games of the season where two ancient rivals get to lock horns and re-establish themselves once more as the kings of England. Okay maybe that’s being a little over the top here as its been some time since Liverpool have dominated, yet this season they have looked extremely strong and at one point considered as potential title winners.

I am sure however that Manchester United will have something to say about that as they themselves look to continue their incredible form as of late. They haven’t lost a game in fifteen while also could make this game their tenth win in a row at the expense of a bitter rival which will make the victory even sweeter. It will be a tough game to win however, with the last victory at Old Trafford back in 2015.

Apart from the last three games played Liverpool have been exceptional all season and had so far kept up with Chelsea who at one points seemed to be running away with it. They are still five points ahead of Liverpool and a loss against United on Sunday could spell disaster for the clubs title winning chances. An away win however could put them just two points behind, but that would of course depend on the final result of Chelsea away to Leicester City on Saturday.

My predictions for this game are in favour of a United win, but I do also feel it could end up a draw of some kind. I am hoping there will be goals as no one likes a fixture like this to end up as a bore draw. So for my banker prediction I am going to go for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score and Manchester United to win the game. The next I am going for is both teams to score and eventually draw the fixture.
