Greece v Northern Ireland Preview, Euro 2016 Qualification, Tuesday 14th October 2014

Greece have not started their qualification for the European Championship Finals in France 2016 at all well. They were defeated 1-0 at home against Romania in their opening game of the group and could only manage a 1-1 draw away against Finland over the weekend and with having secured just a solitary point from those two matches they currently find themselves with it all to do if they are to stay in contention of securing one of those important top two finishes in the group.

Northern Ireland have had no such problems and head into this game having won both of their opening two matches and currently top of the group table as a result. A 2-1 victory away against Hungary in their opening game of the group was followed by a 2-0 win at home against the Faroe Islands over the weekend and although they have not really been tested yet and this game away to Greece will be their most difficult game so far, the players will obviously be confident of getting the job done and retaining their position at the top of the group.

Greece Team News:

Manager Claudio Ranieri has no reported injuries or suspensions to his squad, but could be looking to make at least a couple of changes to the side that drew 1-1 away against Finland over the weekend with Mitroglou, Samaras and Moras all looking to be handed a start having all featured from the bench late on in that game.

Northern Ireland Team News:

Manager Michael O’Neill almost has a full squad to choose his starting lineup from for this game but will be without the services of centre back Johnny Evans who is currently still receiving treatment for a malleolar injury. Striker Kyle Lafferty will be looking to continue his good goal scoring form up front having scored in both of the opening two games of the group.

Greece v Northern Ireland Head to Head Statistics:

Tuesday night’s game from the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki will become the 5th meeting between the two countries over the years and as we can see from our head to head statistics table below there really has been nothing to seperate them as both have won one game each and the remaining three have all finished in draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

8 Goals have been scored in the previous 4 matches played between the two countries which provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.00 and seems to suggest that we should see at least a couple of goals in this game on tuesday night.

Greece v Northern Ireland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Greece: D W L L D

Northern Ireland: D L L W W

Northern Ireland just edge the recent form statistics having won 2, drawn 1 and lost 2 of their previous five matches played, compared to Greece who have won 1, drawn 2 and lost 2 of their previous five matches played.

However, Ireland have never managed to beat Greece in their own country and I think the best result that they can hope for in this game is the draw.

Greece v Northern Ireland Match Betting Odds Market

Greece are the clear odds on favourites to win this game on tuesday night and are current a best price of 8/15 with Bet365 – £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers, which for me does look a little short considering they have yet to win a game in this group.

The Draw does seem a likely outcome in this game as with Northern Ireland having won both of their opening games of the group, they would be quite happy to take a point away with them from this game and I would expect their formation to reflect this on tuesday night, so getting on the draw at a current best price of 10/3 with Totepool – £25 Free Bets for New Customers, does seem the value play here.

Northern Ireland have been playing well, but this will be their toughest game of the group so far and I fully expect them to defend deep in large numbers and play on the counter attack in an attempt to nick a goal so I don’t see them being able to win this game, especially having never beaten Greece in their own back yard in two previous attempts and for me their current best price of 7/1 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets for New Customers, clearly reflects this.

Greece v Northern Ireland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

A must win game for Greece and one that I would expect them to win. However their current odds on offer don’t look at all value in my opinion as they have failed to win any of their previous two matches in the group and do look very vunerable at the back having conceded in both of those matches.

Northern Ireland will be happy enough to take a point back home with them from this game and I would expect the way Michael O’Neill sets his formation up to reflect this and it should have a very similar look to the way they lined up against Hungary in their opening game of the group with Kyle Lafferty acting as the lone striker up front.

Lafferty has scored in both of Northern Ireland’s wins in the group and could be a good choice to get on as an anytime goalscorer for this game as his current odds do look tremendous value and it would seem to suggest that if Northern Ireland did score in this game then it would be the 27 year old Norwich City striker that gets the goal.

The average goals per game statistics are suggesting this game to see between two or three goals scored and for me that looks the best betting opportunity in this game as I would expect the final score line to be 1-1 or 2-1 either way.
