Tottenham Hotspur v Monaco Preview, UEFA Champions League, Group E, 14th September 2016.

I can imagine Tottenham Hotspurs will be extremely happy with the outcome of their group selection. Although each of the teams is no push over they are all beatable with the London club avoiding the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Instead they first face French side Monaco which they are more than familiar with and in the past have experienced beating much like last season in the Europa League.

Then they have the Germans Bayer Leverkusen while also facing CSKA Moscow from Russia at the end of this month. That said it’s not going to be easy sailing and Spurs will need to be on form in each of these games if they wish to proceed to the knock out stages of the competition. Next up for Tottenham Hotspurs is Sunderland who recently took a whipping from Everton so potentially Spurs could keep up their 100% form.

Monaco are also a side in exceptional form right now having recently beaten the French Champions Paris st Germain at home 3 – 1 putting them top of Ligue 1 joint points with Nice. The club did draw their opening game in Ligue 1 against Guingamp who shocked Monaco having took a two goal lead. The equalizer came late in the game with six minutes remaining thus sharing the spoils.

Monaco also had to take a very tough route to get into the Champions League via the qualifying stages. Where they had to face tough side Villarreal who overall lost the game 3 – 1 on aggregate much to the delight of the French side. On top of that they also must be happy with the group they have landed themselves in as they certainly have as much chance as any in this group to earn a spot in the knock out round.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News :

Returning from suspension is midfielder Moussa Dembele who has yet to play a game this season after being sent off against Chelsea at the end of last season. Out injured for Tottenham Hotspurs is full back Danny Rose who picked up an injury for England during the international break.

Monaco Team News :

Monaco will be looking to continue in their success and getting through the group stages having done so five times in the last six attempts. The thing to also note about this Monaco side is that they are a lot stronger since the last time these two met last season. So although Spurs are at home and the slight favourites I wouldn’t be counting Monaco out of the chances of winning.

Tottenham Hotspur v Monaco Head to Head Statistics:

In total the two have met on three occasions with two of them being last season in the Europa League. In which Tottenham Hotspurs won overall being one of the sides responsible for knocking Monaco out of the competition via the group stages. Before that back in 2013 the two clubs met for a friendly in which Monaco humiliated Spurs 5 – 2 in France.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the three games played the two clubs have scored a total of 14 goals which is an impressive amount. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 4.6 and we can only hope to see as many goals come Wednesday evening! That said however I wouldn’t be happy placing a bet on that statistic so instead will go for the below option.

Although Tottenham Hotspurs are in good form having not lost a game so far this season, it is in fact French side Monaco who have the better record with five straight wins in all competitions. Including the convincing win against PSG 3 – 1 in Ligue 1 recently which sets them top of the table with better goal difference than Nice who are also on ten points from a total of twelve.

The Draw is a possibility here especially with the form Monaco are in currently. If both clubs do play well then we could see them cancel each other out on the night even if there are plenty of goals scored.  Tottenham Hotspur v Monaco Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Champions League Group E action this Wednesday night can be viewed live on BT Sports Europa and witnesses home side Tottenham Hotspurs welcoming French club Monaco to Wembley this time and not White Hart Lane. This season we get to see Spurs play their European games at the national sides home ground Wembley which will certainly increase the revenue and numbers able to actually watch the game live.

Although Spurs are the favourites to win this game they must be concerned with the form their opponents Monaco are currently in having beaten all opponents they have so far faced with ease, including the champions Paris st Germain in a 3 – 1 thriller. Odds are suggesting Tottenham Hotspurs will win this game with ease, but I am not having that and will be more cautious.

Monaco last season failed to reach the knock out stages for the first time in the six times they have managed to qualify for the later rounds, and losing to Tottenham Hotspurs away from home last season in the group stages was one of the reasons why. So I can imagine Monaco will be out for some much wanted revenge and then move forward and take the group by storm.

My predictions for this game is favouring that of a draw of some kind, with that result going either way in regards to goals. In one hand I am fancying a hat-full of goals with maybe a 2 – 2 draw, and in the other I am almost expecting it to potentially be goalless! Lets hope not though however as no goals is never a fun game to watch. So for my banker I am going to play safe and just take the plain and simple draw, with the next being both teams to score and Spurs to win the match.
