Republic of Ireland v Sweden Preview, Euro 2016 Finals, Group E, Monday 13th June 2016.

After Northern Ireland losing on Sunday I am sure the Republic of Ireland will want to go out there and do a better job this Monday evening against Sweden. Regarding the nations qualifying stages we did see Republic of Ireland in a very tough group alongside the likes of Poland and World Champions Germany. They did eventually pip Scotland to that third place finish and thus had to then play in the play-offs.

The play-offs we did see Republic of Ireland do very well having drew away from home 1 – 1 to Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was however the 2nd leg at home which proved to be the easier match when they walked out 2 – 0 winners with a brace from Jonathan Walters. Group E will be tough because Sweden are favourites to win on Monday, and no doubt Belgium and Italy, the other teams in the group, will be favourites to beat Ireland also.

Sweden also had to fight through the qualifying stages via the play-offs and it shows with them being seeded in such a tough group. Sweden had a local derby during play-offs and just made it through 4 – 3 on aggregate over the two legs. It was the 2 – 1 win at home in the 1st leg that sealed it and after going up 2 – 0 away from home and with just fifteen minutes to go you could of felt rather safe with a 3 – 1 aggregate. Although with two late goals from Denmark it proved to be a very nervy time in the remaining minutes.

Sweden like the Republic of Ireland will not be considered favourites to progress into the knock out stages, especially when we have Belgium and Italy in Group E. Yet if they can win on Monday night against the Irish then they could hold out against Italy and potentially beat Belgium on the break. Sweden have had mixed results in their friendly games leading up to this competition with two wins and draws and then the one loss away from home to Turkey.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

Republic of Ireland should see Robbie Keane (calf) and James McCarthy (hamstring) return for selection against Sweden Monday night having recovered from injuries. Another name we should see return is striker Jonathan Walters who previously has an Achilles issue. If Keane of Walters cannot start then we should see Shane Long lead the frontline.

Sweden Team News:

A lot of news about Sweden’s most famous player Zlatan Ibrahimovic with reports linking him to Manchester United. It has been said he will not be allowed to leave the Swedish camp to go sign for United and will need to wait until after the competition. They do have a worry in Albin Ekdal who is still recovering from a nasty gash to his back from back in May.

Republic of Ireland v Sweden  Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head battles these two nations have experienced it is all even with two wins each and a draw seen back in 2013. In total they have met on ten occasions with Sweden out in front with five wins, three loses and the two draws. They did manage to win away from home just three years ago and are of course the favourites to win again come Monday evening.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the ten games played previously we have seen a total of 29 goals scored. This is of course going to give us the goals per game average of 2.9 which has only been seen twice in the last five meetings. That said the below option for Mondays game should be a good selection.

Republic of Ireland v Sweden Recent Form (Left to Right)

Republic of Ireland: L D D W W

Sweden: W D D L W

On paper the form between the two nations are exactly the same over the last five matches. Although when looking at who both sides have been playing it is the Republic of Ireland who have had the tougher opponents with the likes of the Netherlands, Switzerland and Slovakia. With that said Sweden are the favourites, but I for one will put a draw down for the below selection.

Sweden are the bookmakers favourites to win this game which to be fair I am kind of concerned about as I don’t think this is fair to the Irish after some good form recently. Republic of Ireland v Sweden Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Monday night will see the Republic of Ireland and Sweden face each other for the first time in a major tournament and will certainly be a game that provides a lot of excitement with some very big names playing in both sides. Granted the two have met on ten occasions in the past and we have seen Sweden win 50% of these games and find themselves the bookmakers favourites to take all three points come Monday evening.

That said both sides only just managed to qualify for the competition with both having to qualify via the play-offs having finished third in both of their group tables. The Republic of Ireland did extremely well to do so beating Scotland to that final qualifying position. They also had to face Poland and World Champions Germany so qualifying out of such a tough group can only be seen as a great achievement.

Sweden’s qualifying group wasn’t anywhere near as tough as their opponents and really should of done better against the likes of Austria and Montenegro. It was Austria who finished first in the group with Russia in second, what makes it worse is that Austria finished a whole ten points ahead of Sweden which is a complete shock in my opinion unless I’ve missed something recently with Austria now becoming an exceptional side?

My predictions for this game is leaning more towards the draw although I really would love to see the Irish win against Sweden this Monday evening. I can’t see either of these two sides doing too well against the likes of Italy and Belgium so it will no doubt be a must win for both nations. I do feel both sides will score on the night so my banker will reflect on this fact. My next prediction is for an anytime goalscorer of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as the prolific goalscorer always seems to do well on the big stages of any competition.
