Lyon v PSG Preview, Ligue 1, Sunday 13th April 2014

Lyons run of form recently has been up and down, although thankfully to them a couple of the games were Europa League fixtures which do not effect their domestic league position. They may of been knocked out of the competition to Juventus this week but are in a good position to earn a place in next years Europa League if results pick up. They are currently in fifth position and just four points behind St Etienne who currently occupy that Europa League entry position.

Paris st Germain have failed in their bid to get to the Champions League final this week after being knocked out by English side Chelsea on away goals. having won 3 – 1 at home the job was meant to be simple when traveling to Stamford Bridge for the away leg. PSG held the ball for the majority of the match and frustrated a Chelsea side who worked hard to grab the two goals needed to win the game on the away goals ruling. PSG just need to win a few more games and then the French title will be theirs once more with Monaco a huge thirteen points behind.

Lyon v PSG Team News

Lyon Team News:

Lyon have a total of four players injured for this home match against the French Champions, with Gueida Fofana among them with a groin strain. Fellow Frenchman Mouhamadou Dabo (hamstring) and Yoann Gourcuff (sprained ankle) are also missing for this game. We also have Miguel Lopes out of the match who is currently recovering from a gashed leg. Remy Vercoutre is also missing due to serving a suspension after reaching a yellow card limit.

PSG Team News:

Paris St Germain only have one injured player missing for this game but he is a huge key player with being the clubs top goal scorer. Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic also missed the away leg at Chelsea due to a thigh muscle strain and was sorely missed as the French Champions failed to find the net after Edison Cavani failed to find a goal with some clear cut chances.

As we can see below it is the French Champions who have pretty much dominated the fixtures between these two clubs with 4 wins and a loss. In total there has been 44 head to head encounters with Lyon actually winning more than PSG with 17 wins to PSG’s 14. We also count 13 draws with 7 of those at Lyons home ground.

In these 44 games played in total there has been 105 goals recorded, which is giving us an average of 2.4 goals per game. Looking at the last 5 head to head games though I don’t feel that fact helps us too much if looking at the total goals per game bet options.

Lyon v PSG Recent Form (Left to Right)

Lyon: W L L W L

Paris St Germain are in incredible form right now and their recent loss was actually in the Champions League to Chelsea where they also found themselves knocked out of the competition 3 – 3 on aggregate and the away goals rule. With six games to go PSG are very close to claiming yet another domestic French Ligue 1 title.

Lyon v PSG Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

French Ligue One action on BT Sports this Sunday offers a potentially exciting match with both teams looking for a win for their own important reasons. PSG were knocked out of the Champions League to Chelsea this week after falling short and exiting on the away goals ruling. Its a huge disappointment for the French Champions who were in prime position after their impressive 3 – 1 home win over the English side.

Lyon have their own agenda as they themselves also see exit from Europe this week after losing twice to Italian Champions in the Europa league quarter finals. They are currently four points away from that forth place finish that will insure they can retry in next years competition. With just eighteen points left up for grabs if they play well and results fall their way then Europe next year could be a realistic possibility. But first they need to get past the French Champions and will need to do their best to earn any form of positive result here. Next weekend is a huge game for Lyon who then have to play PSG once more but this time in the Coupe de la Ligue Cup Final and a win on Sunday could seriously aid in that fixture with the Champions potentially suffering from a confidence hit.

My predictions for this Sundays game though does actually favour that of PSG who will be looking to bounce back after their recent defeat in the Champions League. I am going for Cavani to score this time and PSG to win. The striker has been in good form this season although he was miss firing against Chelsea over both legs. The other I am going for is a score draw, I just feel Lyon may have something in them on Sunday and as they are hoping for a higher finish in the league could potentially dig deep and find that elusive result against the French champions.
