Sunderland v Manchester United Preview, Premiership, Saturday 13th February 2016.

Sunderland’s more recent dip in form has seen them slump into the relegation zone with neighbors Newcastle United heading out of the troubled zone and four points ahead. They did however do well last Saturday when they traveled to Liverpool and drew the game 2 – 2 and you can only hope they grow in confidence from their fans point of view as welcoming Manchester United to your ground this week will certainly not be easy considering their recent form. My predictions at the beginning of this season did see Aston Villa and Sunderland relegated with the third up in the air and more than likely to be one of last seasons Championships promoted sides, and so far that prediction hasn’t failed to disappoint with both clubs mentioned truly routed at the bottom and likely candidates to drop down a league come the end of the season.

Manchester United have been a constant feature in the news as of late with Louis Van Gaal’s managerial position a hot topic, alongside potential replacement and long term admirer Jose Mourinho’s apparent acceptance of the job offered. Of course this is all just media hype and the usual ‘lets make up a story’ tactic often seen by the British media. Anyway with that statement taken into account if Manchester United do start losing again then surely they are likely to sack Van Gaal as the danger of not finishing in the top four continues to pressure the man in charge. United have improved a lot recently and now start looking like a side who could do some damage, and to be honest they were unlucky in the end to draw in the end to Chelsea as David de Gea looked incredible and unlikely to let anything past him.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland are missing Duncan Watmore and Younes Kaboul on Saturday with them nursing ankle ligament damage, while Billy Jones is unlikely to feature having struggled to shake off a hip injury. Sebastian Larsson has returned to training but will unlikely feature at all with him needing some much needed match fitness. Fabio Borini however is available for selection after missing the draw against Liverpool with a virus.

Manchester United Team News:

Manchester United are still in a crisis in terms of first team injuries right now with eight players currently unavailable for selection. Phil Jones, Guillermo Varela and Januzaj all picked up knocks in the U21 game against Norwich City on Monday and join Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Bastian Schweinsteiger watching the game from afar. Some good news though is in form striker Will Keane has been rewarded with a first team selection spot after scoring five goals past Norwich for the U21’s.

Sunderland v Manchester United Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games played against each other Manchester United have been the better side as expected, yet we did see Sunderland manage a win and a draw in 2014. In total they have featured against each other on 121 occasions with Manchester United winning 57 and losing 36, leaving 28 games ending as draws of some kind.

Sunderland are heading for relegation the way they are playing and although they have earned a could of results last month they now seem to be on the decline again. Manchester United have improved since their FA Cup win and are we now going to see the United of old, challenging for the title again?

Sunderland v Manchester United Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premiership action this week comes live from Sunderland on BT Sports 1 High Definition and welcomes Manchester United who are in search of another three points as they look to mount a serious title challenge against Leicester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs and the clubs noisy neighbors Manchester City. Manchester United are into the 5th round of the FA Cup and managed an easy 3 – 0 win over tough side Stoke City recently, and even almost grabbed another three points last weekend until Chelsea managed a late equalizer to earn a point at Stamford Bridge. The Red Devils are now six points behind Manchester City who sit in forth and a further six points adrift top of the league Leicester City who seem to somehow be running away with the league.

Sunderland as already mentioned due look likely to be joining Aston Villa and one other in the Championships next season and unless they improve could be set for a shock as I personally don’t see them coming straight back up anytime soon. Very much like Aston Villa if I am honest, once they do go down I do feel it will be a decade or two before we see them come back into the worlds biggest football league. Sunderland do have some easier opponents coming up, although I still don’t see them earning too many points against Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton. With West Ham United coming after Manchester United you can’t help but worry for the club and the players confidence.

My predictions for this game do of course see Manchester United win, and I can’t see Sunderland putting up too much of a fight even though the club are at home for the fixture. For my banker I am going to go with Manchester United to win by a two goal margin as I just don’t see Sunderland getting too many chances to score, especially with the Spaniard in goal for United. The other I am going for is for Will Keane to grab his chance to impress the Dutch manager and come on at some point and score for Manchester United.
