Liverpool v Arsenal Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 13th January 2016.

The Liverpool youngsters had a tough time in Devon against League Two side Exeter City in the FA Cup third round on Friday night as the game ended 2 – 2. Exeter City twice took the lead only for a couple of defensive mistakes costing them a trip into the next round against West Ham United. It’s back to Premiership action however this week with Liverpool welcoming league leaders Arsenal to Anfield in a bid to close the twelve point gap between the two clubs. Granted Liverpool couldn’t hope to win the league this season, yet a top four finish should always be an achievable goal for such a club as Liverpool. Arsenal will be the favourites to grab a result on Wednesday night which will then pile on some pressure as they then host Manchester United this coming Sunday.

Arsenal enjoyed a much more productive FA Cup third round tie in which they beat Premier League strugglers Sunderland at home 3 – 1. Sunderland did however shock Arsenal when they took the lead just after the quarter hour mark with a Jeremain Lens goal. Joel Campbell equalized eight minutes later to ease the nerves only for Aaron Ramsey and Oliver Giroud to grab the winners later on in the second half. Arsenal now face Burnley in the 4th round and happily accept the home tie in which they were given. Arsenal are the favourites to win against Liverpool even though they are away from home this Wednesday, yet if they do lose they could then hand back the top of the table to Leicester City who face Tottenham Hotspurs away from home at the same time.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool are hoping the return of Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho can tighten up their defense somewhat, with new loan signing Steven Caulker likely to start on the bench this Wednesday.  James Milner, previously out with a calf strain, Jordeon Ibe and Jordon Henderson have all returned to training and could be available for selection. Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Philippe Coutinho, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge are all missing for Wednesdays game due to hamstrings. While Joe Gomez and Danny Ings are out long term.

Arsenal Team News:

Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker have returned after being rested against Sunderland in the FA Cup. Good news is Tomas Rosicky is back in training while Alexis Sanchez still has a little wait while recovering from a hamstring strain. David Ospina is still out with a groin strain and Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck and Francis Coquelin are all out due to knee issues.

Liverpool v Arsenal Head to Head Statistics:

Arsenal just come out on top with two home wins while Liverpool just have the one win back in 2014 at home, leaving the other two games ending as draws of some kind. In total we have 185 games played out between the two clubs with Arsenal just out in front with 68 wins and 67 loses, leaving 50 games in total ending as draws. The last time Arsenal won away from home was twice on the bounce back in 2012 and in the league.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 185 games played out between these two Premiership clubs we have seen a total of 511 goals scored which is going to give us a goals per game average of just over 2.7 which as you can see above is always going to be hit and miss when these two play. I’d say however that the below selection is always going to be your best selection for this game.

Liverpool v Arsenal Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Liverpool: D W L W W

Arsenal: W W W L W

Arsenal are of course the better team in form here and also sit two points clear atop of the Premiership table coming into this game. They also sailed past Premiership opponents in the FA Cup 3rd round where as Liverpool struggled against League Two opponents Exeter City. Liverpool so have plenty of injuries so I would be backing that of Arsenal to win.

Liverpool v Arsenal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

It’s been a fine week with the FA Cup 3rd round action on display and no better than when underdogs such as Exeter City manage to hold Premiership teams such as Liverpool to a 2 – 2 draw. Not only that, but the League Two side took the lead twice only for Liverpool’s youngsters to prove their worth and earn that reply at Anfield even though Jurgen Klopp was wishing for them to go through first time. This Wednesday we return to the Premier League as Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield in hopes of reducing that twelve point gap and moving up the league as they push for a Champions League spot. The game can be viewed live on BT Sports 1 High Definition and promises to be an entertaining fixture at the least.

Arsenal are away from home Wednesday night yet are a team in fine form with sitting two points clear atop of the Premier League. If they do manage an away win they could extend their lead to five points as Leicester City certainly don’t have an easy game as they travel away from home to Tottenham Hotspurs. Liverpool need to get back to winning ways, yet a hamstring curse from hell plagues the squad with five first team players all currently unavailable. Arsenal themselves have also had their own injury woes and still miss top players such as Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere. Arsenal are the favourites to win the game yet that won’t be an easy task and a draw could very well be the better selection for Wednesday night.

My predictions for this game do tend to lean towards the draw yet I also feel Arsenal do have it in them to pull off that win and increase their lead atop of the table. So in that respect I feel going for the above would be the best bet, and for my banker I am going to go with both teams to score and end the game as a draw. The other I am going for is Arsenal to win the game, but on top of that I am going to take Oliver Giroud to score at some point also. The Frenchman is in fine form recently even though he has only scored a couple of goals in the last five games in all competitions. Three games before that he had scored six goals, even though one of them was an own goal gift for Sunderland, he did however score again in that game which also ended 3 – 1 in Arsenal’s favour.
