Austria v Republic of Ireland Preview, World Cup 2018, Qualifier, Friday 12th November 2016.

After such an incredible European Championship Qualifying campaign I am shocked to see this Austria side struggling so much in Group D. The way things are going it will be a tough year for Austria if they wish to progress and qualify for the World Cup in 2018. So far they have managed to win, draw and lose a match and currently sit in 4th behind Serbia, Republic of Ireland and Wales.

With them at home on Saturday to the Republic of Ireland you would expect them to play a lot better than recently, yet their only home game of the tournament so far see them draw the game 2 – 2 with the Welsh. A win on Saturday night could see them jump up the table but that does also depend on how Wales do when Serbia visit them in Cardiff a couple of hours later.

The Irish continue their good form after having a successful European Championships in France. tallying two wins and a draw in Group D, and they currently sit in second place with the same points as Serbia who have the better goal difference. They have had the easier two teams of the group however with them recording wins over Georgia at home and then Moldova 3 – 1 away from home.

It’ll be a tough match for the Republic of Ireland this Saturday as it was always going to be a challenge playing Austria either home or away. Neighbors Wales did well in Austria back in October recording a 2 – 2 draw, yet could of done slightly better having let the lead slip twice just minutes after taking the lead each time.

Austria Team News:

Austria defender Sebastian Prodl is missing for this game as well as fellow outfield player Zlatko Junuzovic. On top of that number one goalkeeper Robert Almer has suffered an injury so will not feature.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

The Irish sadly had to send home Leeds United player Eunan O’Kane this week due to a groin issue while John O’Shea and McClean return to the selection options. Ireland are already without James McCarthy, Daryl Murphy and Shane Long which isn’t good news with them facing a strong Austria side, regardless of the fact their form has slumped somewhat.

Austria v Republic of Ireland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head battles we have seen Austria pretty much dominate with four solid wins and the 2 – 2 draw back in 2013. They have played a total of eight times with the Republic of Ireland only ever winning the once way back in 1963 during the European Championships Qualification rounds. Austria have won on five occasions leaving the two draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these eight games played we have seen a total of twenty nine goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 3.6 which is very high. With that in mind we can only hope to see a fair few goals on Saturday evening especially if four out of the last five games played are anything to go by. That said I am going to go for the below selection, as the last time these two met we had only seen the one goal scored.

Austria v Republic of Ireland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Austria: L D W L D

Republic of Ireland: W W D W L

With the home side Austria being so good last year I was expecting more of the same this time round. Yet their current form suggests they are really struggling to earn good results during this World Cup Qualification. Republic of Ireland however are in good form and have three wins out of their last five internationals.

Austria v Republic of Ireland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

International break this weekend can be found live via Sky Sports 1 and of course viewed in all is high glorified definition. We witness Austria welcoming the Republic of Ireland to their ground in hopes of kick starting their own World Cup Qualification. As recently having only four points out of the three games played is not seen as good enough especially with them winning qualification to the European Championships in France with ease.

Both sides are without a number of first team players for this match and you can only put two and two together when looking at Austria’s recent form since such a great European Championship Qualification tournament. The Republic of Ireland had an exceptional experience during the European Championships in France and have continued their good form in previous matches against Moldova and Georgia.

Austria are the favourites to win this match but I am convinced the Irish will not make it easy for them. We must also remember that the Republic of Ireland have only beaten Austria on one occasion which was way back in 1963, so can they break that tradition and top the table ahead of the Wales v Serbia match a couple of hours later.

My predictions for this game will be backing that of an Irish draw, and although they are the underdogs and away from home I just feel they will continue their good form against this struggling Austria side. My banker will be for Republic of Ireland to win the game, and for both teams to score during the ninety minutes. My next will be for a correct scoreline of 1 – 1 on the night. This does go against the goals per game average, but if you look at the last time they met only the one goal was scored.
