Everton v Chelsea Preview, FA Cup Quarter Final, Saturday 12th March 2016.

FA Cup fever in the blue side of Merseyside this Saturday evening as Everton welcome Premiership Champions Chelsea to Goodison Park in what should be an incredible game of exciting football. As we know Everton have had the upper hand against the champions this season having already beaten them at home 3 – 1 back in September. They then also managed the high scoring draw of 3 – 3 at the bridge in January when both clubs scored in the 90th minute to earn a point.

Everton’s league performances however haven’t matched that of their FA Cup run with them currently below mid table and still a few points shy of Premier League safety. They have however managed to win three of their last five league games with the remaining two they did play become painful loses at home against West Bromwich Albion and more recently West Ham United.

Chelsea this week find themselves knocked out of the Champions League having lost both home and away 2 – 1, leaving their opponents PSG to go onward with a 4 – 2 aggregate. Chelsea as we know have not been the team of last year and have struggled all season under Jose Mourinho who was eventually sacked for the first time in his career. Hiddink was bought in once again to help repair Chelsea’s hopes and has at least managed to get them into a better place.

Chelsea have a mixed run up to the end of the season with the worst of the bunch being that of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs and current leaders Leicester City, although the West Ham United game could also be hit and miss depending on if Chelsea actually turn up to play football. With them out of the Champions League it is only the FA Cup they are left to challenge for as a top four finish is highly unlikely.

Everton Team News:

Everton could likely be without winger Aaron Lennon for this game with the ex Spurs player suffering a hamstring. We also know that sadly Bryan Oviedo was admitted to hospital due to a nasty chest infection and will not feature come Saturday. Leighton Baines has spent a lot of this season injured and is still having issues with his ankle, yet could still play with some effective pain killers.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea’s front line has had constant issues this season and coming into this game they could also be missing Diego Costa who had to come off in the loss to PSG this week due to a tendon issue. Eden Hazard has returned from a hip injury and John Terry has also returned from an ongoing issue with his hamstring. Pato has still yet to make his Chelsea debut and word is it may well be Saturday in the FA Cup?

Everton v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games played out against each other we do see it is Chelsea who have been the better side with three wins. The last two results however have been with Everton with them winning at home and drawing away in the league this season. In total the two have played against each other on 162 occasions with Chelsea just out on top with 61 wins and 51 loses. Leaving 50 games remaining all ending in draws of some sort.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 162 games played out there has been a total of 494 goals scored which is going to give us a goals per game average of 3 which is far off the mark when looking at the last five games played. Its a tough one to predict when looking above as nine goals scored in one game and just the once in another? So lets play safe and go for the below selection.

Everton: L W W L W

Chelsea: L D W W W

Both sides haven’t been the best we’ve seen them be in the last couple of years especially Chelsea who at one point came close to a relegation spot! Everton haven’t been the same since David Moyes left for Manchester United and seem to be a middle based Premiership side under their new manager..

Everton v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

FA Cup Quarter Final action on Saturday can be found coming in live on BBC One and see’s home side Everton welcome Premier League Champions in glorious High Definition. Everton as we know have been the better team between the two clubs this year having already won at Goodison Park, as well as an incredible 3 – 3 draw at Stamford Bridge. When Everton scored to make it 3 – 2 in the 90th minute no one could of predicted John Terry’s 95th minute equalizer to earn a point.

With the FA Cup being rumored to be the only thing saving Everton manager Roberto Martinez’ job right now I still find it incredible to see that after all the Spaniard has done the British media still struggle to write something positive. Granted the ex Wigan manager hasn’t had as much success as David Moyes who left for the Manchester United job. Regardless of if Everton do lose I personally cannot see the manager being sacked come the end of the season.

Chelsea have nine Premier League games left to play and will need to win each and every single one of them if they wish to potentially finish in the top four. But lets be realistic can we really see the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City failing to win sixteen to eighteen points in their last ten league games? Not me personally but it will be fun to see them climb the table after such a poor first half to the season.

With them now out of the Champions League competition I do feel the FA Cup is the only option for the club if they do wish to at least play some part in Europe next season. That said however, my money is still on Arsenal or West Ham United to win the FA Cup this season, especially with the way Manchester United have performed this season. I am still shocked to see them anywhere near the top five.

My predictions for this game would go both ways really as I feel its only fair to give both clubs the respect they deserve for getting this far in the competition. For my banker I plan to just go for something simple and back there to be a total of either two to three goals scored on the night. As backing either side to win as a banker could be a little wayward.

The other I am going for is to actually back Everton to continue with their impressive run against Chelsea this season. For this I plan to take the enhanced odds for Everton to win after both clubs manage to score on the night. Everton are the favourites with them being at home so it makes sense for me to back them.
