Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 11th December 2013

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wasn’t best pleased after Stoke City claimed a late winner at the weekend which ended the game 3 – 2 in Stokes favor. The ‘Special One’ has stated that he is looking to build a perfect squad over the years and wasn’t expecting to return to Stamford Bridge and recreate what he achieved in his last spell as Chelsea manager. They may have lost at the weekend but Chelsea are sitting in 3rd position and have everything to fight for if they are to push towards winning another Premiership title. Its do or die for Chelsea on Wednesday night knowing that a win will be the only thing to guarantee the number one spot in the group. Because a draw won’t be enough if Basel do win against Schalke on Wednesday night.

Steaua Bucharest have nothing to lose going into this match on Wednesday as no result can get them into the next round. Its been a poor competition having recorded no wins so far and have a total of 3 points due to the same amount of games drawn. In their domestic league they are in fact doing very well and sit in 3rd place and are currently on an 11 game unbeaten run in all competitions. i can see them wanting to attempt a win on Wednesday which will even up the head to head statistics, but if we are honest I don’t see it a likely result. With the last result between Chelsea and this side ending in a 4 – 0 hammering at home they will be looking to rectify that poor result and seek some sort of payback.

Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest Team News

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho left out Frank Lampard in the loss against Stoke City at the weekend in favor of the German striker Andre Schurrle who grabbed himself a couple of goals. Sadly the youngster could be missing from Wednesdays game due to a slight calf strain. Chelsea are still without the Brazilian Oscar who is recovering from an ankle injury but fans will be pleased to hear center back David Luiz is close to a return from a knee injury.

Steaua Bucharest Team News:

Although right now in all competitions Steaua Bucharest are not exactly hitting a hat full of goals in any of their matches, they still have a side with many of players more than comfortable with hitting the ball between the posts. Right now we have the Italian striker Piovaccari as the clubs top scorer with 5 goals in 9 games. We also have up front partner Kapetanos scoring 3 in 7 with a majority of the clubs goals coming from the midfield and the back four surprisingly.

Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest Head to Head Statistics

Chelsea have the better run of results between these two sides who have only met three times in the past. Chelsea having won two of them with one away and the other at home should be setup for yet another victory at The Bridge unless Steaua Bucharest aim to make the head to head statistics equal come Wednesday evening.

01/10/13 UCL Steaua Bucharest – Chelsea 0 : 4
14/03/13 UEL Chelsea – Steaua Bucharest 3 : 1
07/03/13 UEL Steaua Bucharest – Chelsea 1 : 0

Average Goals Per Game?

With only 3 head to head results being witnessed we have a total of 9 goals. Which as you can guess gives us an average of 3 goals per game so we are hoping to see the same again come Wednesday evening at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest Recent Form

Chelsea: L W W L W

Steaua Bucharest: D W D D D

Chelsea may have dropped points this weekend in a shock defeat to Stoke City, yet they are still a team in better form that Wednesdays opponents Steaua Bucharest. Although they have gone 11 games undefeated in all competitions, most of them results have ended up in low score draws and also 4 wins.

Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will be expecting a huge comeback from his side coming into this match. He was clearly not happy with the loss against Stoke City at the weekend as was quick to say so as he criticized his side afterwards in the press conference. Chelsea however will find themselves unstuck if they do come into this game with a lack of confidence as only a win will see them finish top of the group. If they do manage to drop points and lose then they could see either Basel or Schalke pip them to the top spot in Group E. Again a draw however will also not be enough if Basel come away winners as they will finish the group 1 point clear of Chelsea, a team Basel have beaten home and away this season.

So coming into this match we are of course expecting Chelsea to walk away with a large result, maybe another 4 – 0 if we are lucky as all neutrals watching the Champions League do enjoy a goal crazy game. So with that comes my first prediction of a Chelsea Goal Crazy 4+ goals which is more than doable if Jose’s men bring their shooting boots. We could go for both teams to score and Chelsea to win which is showing some nice odds and with Chelsea leaking goals lately could well be an option!

But to be honest I feel as my second prediction it can only be aimed at Chelsea legend Frank Lampard to score and for Chelsea to win. Something we all know is very doable and with him missing the game against Stoke he could be a guaranteed starter for Wednesdays game. Now that he has started scoring again I feel he has at least a goal in him in front of the crowd at Stamford Bridge.
