Manchester United v Wigan Athletic Preview, FA Community Shield, Sunday 11th August 2013

It was the usual ups and downs in the pre-season for Man Utd with some well recorded wins and the usual loses which are always to be expected. It was mainly about giving fringe players a try out and also seeing how well the new youth are doing, and it didn’t take long for the likes of Jesse Lingard, Januzaj and Sir Alex’s last signing Wilfred Zaha to impress new boss David Moyes. But things seem very different around the Manchester United camp, almost strange and surreal with the lack of Sir Alex Ferguson on the touch line. He served this great club incredibly well and his kind will never be seen or replicated again in football.

It must of been a hard blow to take for departing manager Roberto Martinez after winning the FA Cup for the first time and then also experiencing relegation into the Championships and you can be certain that if the club did manage to survive then the Spaniard would still be at Wigan and not at Everton with David Moyes leaving to take up the hot seat at Manchester United. Wigan took their time in appointing a new manager in which Owen Coyle succeeded over many well established managers and so far during pre-season has had some fair results with recording 3 wins and 1 loss at home to Scottish club Dundee United.

Manchester United v Wigan Athletic Team News

Manchester United Team News:

With the youngsters playing so well in pre-season I am not sure new manager David Moyes will be sending any of them out on loan this season and personally can imagine them getting well deserved chances early on in the new campaign. With much of the headlines featuring the want away striker Wayne Rooney and the possible signings of Fabregas, Ronaldo, Fellani and Layton Baines recently it is hard to miss anything else transfer news related on Sky Sports News.

With Chelsea showing their firm interest in the unsettled striker David Moyes still insists Rooney is not for sale and will be wearing a United shirt come the new season, but with recent reports of dressing room bust ups with Rio Ferdinand, Evra and legend Ryan Giggs it will be hard for the Scot to keep a player that is being so disruptive to a great squad harmony such as what is found in the Premiership Champions dressing room.

Wigan Athletic Team News:

With dropping down a division Wigan were no different when it came down to losing some players and it didn’t take long for former boss Martinez to come raiding his old side and snapping up Antolin Alcaraz on a free and striker Arouna Kone for just over 6 million. On top of that 9 others have left the club with 8 of them being free transfers.

Owen Coyle has managed to add his own stamp on things signing 10 new players with people such as Scott Carson, Grant Holt and James Perch from Newcastle which have come very cheap. Wigan’s most expensive transfer cost them just over 2 million when left midfielder James McClean joined them from Sunderland who was having hard luck trying to fight for his place under Paolo Di Canio.
