Sunderland v Everton Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 11th May 2016

Could we yet again see another great escape from Sunderland who seem to be making a habit of surviving the drop in the final few games of the season. What an incredible win it was last week when they played hosts to last seasons Champions Chelsea. It looks bad at first when Diego Costa scored the first just before the quarter hour mark only for Sunderland to equalize four minutes from time. Sadly for the home side however, they went into half time 2 – 1 down when Matic managed to put Chelsea back in front.

The second half provided a very entertaining game when Borini equalized only for Jermain Defoe to shock Chelsea with another goal just three minutes later! Sunderland managed to keep the lead until then end but just before the final whistle we did see John Terry dismissed for the visitors after a second yellow card offense. This Wednesday could see Sunderland safe from relegation. If they do manage to win it will put them four points ahead of neighbours Newcastle United and in turn see their rivals relegated as well as Norwich City.

Everton have been extremely poor this season although they did have a healthy FA Cup run until they were knocked out against Manchester United in the semi-finals at Wembley. Much talk in the news regarding the managers job security and with the club having been bought out by some very rich owners we could potentially see a big name come in and make Everton a powerhouse, much like we have seen Manchester City become in the last five years.

Everton lost at the weekend against crowned Champions Leicester City and went home on the back of a 3 – 1 result. Now I can’t see that game costing Martinez, yet loses on Wednesday to Sunderland and then Norwich City at home next Sunday could be enough to see the owners make a important choice. It would be a sad choice I feel, with the manager high on my list when it comes down to talented young managers. But then I am not a multi billionaire football club owner so what do I know eh?

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland were without Billy Jones against Chelsea due to a hip injury, and we are unsure if he is available on Wednesday. It looks as though Lukasz Fabianski could miss the rest of the season due to fatigue, which I find strange for a goalkeeper. Apart from these two names Sunderland have very little injury worries right now.

Everton Team News:

Everton midfielder Gareth Barry only had a slight chance to feature against Leicester City yet failed to make the subs bench, and once again could miss Wednesday nights game against Sunderland. Seamus Coleman also missed the last game due to a hamstring issue, and is again unlikely for the next fixture. Gerard Deulofeu (knee) and Tyias Browning (knee) are out for the rest of the season, while Phil Jagielka (hamstring) is still unavailable.

Sunderland v Everton Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head fixtures these two Premiership clubs have shared the spoils with two wins each and a draw back in 2014. In total we have 142 games recorded with Everton out in front with 66 wins and 53 loses. Leaving the remaining 23 games ending in draws of some sort. Sunderland are the favourites to win Wednesday night, and would of course see them avoid relegation once again.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 142 games featured against each other we have seen a total of 471 goals scored. This is going to give us a high average of 3.3 which isn’t exactly too accurate when looking at the last five games played. This season we did see an incredible game at Goodison Park where eight goals were scored in total. I am going to go with the below selection which seems more realistic.

Everton are in dire form right now having only won the two games in their last ten fixtures played in all competitions. In the Premiership they have only managed to total six points from these games, with one of the wins a 2 – 0 result against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter final. Sunderland seem to have come very close to avoiding the drop once again with two wins and two draws in their last five games.

Sunderland v Everton Match Betting Odds Market

Sunderland are at home and could find the relegation a laughing matter if they manage to win this game Wednesday night. I say laugh only because the result would see their bitter rivals Newcastle United relegated. A predicament I am sure all Sunderland fans would find amusing. The Draw is not enough for Sunderland who would then have to rely on the game against Watford to make sure they avoid relegation come the end of the season. This would of course also depend on if Newcastle United manage to beat Spurs at home in their last game of the season. Sunderland v Everton Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Premiership action soon comes to a close with just two games left remaining for relegation fighting Sunderland. As already mentioned a victory at home could see both Norwich City and Newcastle United relegated which would in turn be an incredible double for Sunderland with them avoiding relegation and seeing bitter rivals Newcastle United relegated to the Championship. The game can be viewed live via Sky Sports 1 and of course in its glorious High Definition!

Sunderland are the odds on favourites to win the game, especially as they seem to have found some good form just when they need it more. With a victory over last seasons Champions Chelsea making sure they leave themselves in a good position in the remaining two games they still cannot step off the gas if they wish to make sure they’re safe from the drop. Two loses in their final games could see either Newcastle of Norwich City safe if they in turn win their remaining games.

Everton may well look like a completely new team coming into next season with the club having recently selling out to multi-billionaire tycoons. Not only is a new manager rumored to replace current occupant Martinez, we could see the club spend more than ever with a healthy transfer kitty likely to be available to the new manager, whoever he is. That is of course if Martinez does get the sack, we can’t jump the gun just yet on that situation.

Although Everton are safe from the relegation they certainly will not want to lose against Sunderland and Norwich City in their final two games. Especially seeing as both of these opponents could still potentially be relegated come the end of the season. Defeat to either or both will no doubt spell an end for Martinez I feel, with the club likely to replace him at the end of the season. Although unlikely, Everton can still finish in ninth ahead of Chelsea. It would require a lot of if’s and buts however.

My predictions for this game does lean more towards the draw on Wednesday nights game. I say this because although Sunderland have been in great form I do potentially see them leaving it to their last game of the season against Watford away from home. It would provide a very exciting and nerve wracking time for the clubs involved and its passionate fans with two out of Sunderland, Newcastle United or Norwich certain to be relegated alongside Aston Villa.

For my banker prediction I am going to select both teams to score on the night and for the result to end with a point each, which will in turn take us to the above paragraph’s situation for the final game of the season next weekend. For my second prediction I was fancying a 1 – 0 dramatic win for Sunderland, yet instead feel taking Fabio Borini to score and for Sunderland to win could be a better option. The best odds for both predictions can be found below.
