Liverpool v Chelsea Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 11th May 2016

It’s a great time for Liverpool to be facing last seasons Champions Chelsea with the Blues having only won the once in their last five games played. Where if Liverpool do win their finals games against Chelsea and then West Bromwich Albion next Sunday, they would go into their final game of the season in extremely high spirits. This is of course the Europa League Final on the 18th May where they face last years holders Sevilla at St Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland.

It has been surprising really as Liverpool haven’t performed as they should have in the Premiership losing against the likes of Swansea City 3 – 1 recently although did recover at the weekend 2 – 0 at home to Watford. Jordan Henderson is missing due a serious knee injury yet has stated to England manager Roy Hodgeson that he will be 100% fit to play in France and has even said he is hoping to be back in time to be available for selection in the Europa League Final.

Could Chelsea end their season on the back of three defeats? It’s more than possible when analyzing their current form with only the one win in their last five games played in the Premier League. With loses to Swansea City, Manchester City and more recently Sunderland it isn’t exactly showing good things for the team who dominated the league table last season. Liverpool and Leicester City are the clubs last two games and both will not want to lose against Chelsea. Granted Leicester City have already been crowned Champions, but imagine how great it will be to finish the season with a win over last seasons Champions?

it will be a strange feeling not seeing Chelsea in the Champions League next season with them no where near a top four finish. The highest the club can finish this season is their current position of ninth. Although could allow that to slip with both Stoke and Swansea City playing well and picking up points. Even Everton could climb above Chelsea, although I find that unlikely with Sunderland looking to secure their safety on Wednesday night against Everton at home.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool have a few injury issues right now but then nothing has changed in that department with them having terrible problems all season. We already know Danny Ings is out for the rest of the season having suffered an ACL knee ligament injury a while back. Joseph Gomez (knee ligament), Joran Rossiter (hamstring), Andre Wisdom (knee) and Divock Origi (ankle) have all missed a fair few games now although we could see origi and Jordan Henderson return before the curtains come down.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea have just the two injuries with Kurt Zouma out for some time with an ACL Knee ligament injury. Loic Remy completes Chelsea’s injury list with a groin strain and is unlikely to return for the clubs final game against Leicester City at the weekend. John Terry is also missing for the final two games of the season after he received a two match ban after being sent off with two yellow cards against Sunderland last weekend.

Liverpool v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games played Chelsea just step out in front with two wins, two draws and the one loss this season at Stamford Bridge. In total we have 163 games recorded between the two giant English clubs with Liverpool enjoying more wins with 70 in total. Chelsea have won on 56 occasions and have found it a lot easier since the club was bought out many years ago now. The two clubs have also drawn on 37 occasions.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 163 games played out against each other we have seen a total of 467 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 2.8 which is very hit and miss when looking at the last few years head to head fixtures. With the way both clubs are playing I do fancy the below selection come Wednesday, and I can only imagine Liverpool will be the club who score a majority of them.

Chelsea: L D W L L

To be fair both clubs haven’t been great all season especially when it comes down to the English Premier League with both clubs finishing way below par. Chelsea didn’t have a great European experience and were eventually knocked out against PSG. Where as Liverpool have done far better having reached the Europa League final against Sevilla.

The Draw is I feel a solid option whenever these two meet in the league, and on more occasions than not very few goals get scored. That said however we also know these two sides are unpredictable so proceed with care! Chelsea any other year would of no doubts been the favourites to win this game, yet with a season they will quickly want to forget coming to a close i can imagine the team and its fans would like to go out with a win at Anfield. Liverpool v Chelsea Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Wednesday Nights Premiership Action has a few good games up on offer with Sunderland set to face Everton as well as Watford verses Norwich City at Carrow Road. With both of these games sure to bring in a large portion of the footballing punters we are still left with mid-table sides Liverpool verses Chelsea for our remaining games. I wasn’t sure if to laugh or be worried that two of the countries biggest teams are likely to finish around middle of the table, especially with the history attached to both clubs.

Granted Liverpool haven’t reproduced the goods since the eighties yet are still seen roughly in the top six come the end of each season, where as Chelsea won the actual Premiership last season. Not only did they win the league, they completely dominated so as we can all imagine this season has come as a clear shock after they failed to even give a good attempt of retaining their title. With them instead still in a position to finish eleventh a massive eight positions away from a Champions League spot, much like what we expect a side like Chelsea to achieve!

That said we do get to watch an English club in a final in Europe this season, with Liverpool going all of the way to face last seasons Europa League winners Sevilla there as the opponents. It’s a tough choice in which we see win that game, as Liverpool haven’t done well on their travels in Europe, and have instead relied on Anfields atmosphere to carry them through. The game is to be played in Switzerland at Basel’s ground so is a neutral ground, yet will that matter come the 18th May?

With Leicester City to replace Chelsea in the Champions League next season it does seem very strange to say it, let alone think it! I am actually very excited for The Foxes next season, and really do hope they manage to keep all of their title winning team in tact. It will feel strange not seeing Chelsea face the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid, and instead see the likes of Ronaldo or Messi playing a game or two in Leicester next season.

My predictions for this Liverpool verses Chelsea game is fancying that of a Liverpool win. Especially as Chelsea are without John Terry at the back and also coming into this game having only won once in their last five league games played. I do feel both teams will score in the match, as regardless we all know Chelsea are an attacking force and easily have it in them to score a goal or three. So for that my banker will be both teams to score and Liverpool to win the match. The next I am going for is a score draw of 1 – 1 and actually came close to putting that result as my banker.
