Chelsea v PSG Preview, Champions League, Last 16 2nd Leg, Wednesday 11th March 2015

Chelsea managed to secure an important 1-0 victory at the Parc de Princes in the 1st Leg after defender Ivanovic fired the visitors into a 36min lead and although the hosts did fight back and score the equaliser on 54mins with Cavani it does put Jose Mourinho’s side firmly in the driving seat for this 2nd Leg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have since gone on to win the League Cup after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final at Wembley and followed that victory up with a 1-0 away against West Ham United in the Premiership last weekend in what was a very hard fought match and the players confidence will be at an all time high at the moment.

PSG have also been on the winning trail since the 1-1 1st Leg three weeks ago and have won three and drawn one of their following four matches and head into this 2nd Leg on the back of a very impressive 4-1 victory at home against Lens over the weekend, so you would imagine that their players will also be right up for this game on Wednesday night and we should be in for a very tight and exciting affair.

Chelsea Team News:

The hosts welcome back Nemanja Matic to the squad after he has now served his two match ban and he looks likely to go straight into the starting lineup for this one if he passes a late fitness test after injuring his ankle in the League Cup celebrations. John Obi Mikel is definitely ruled out for this game as he continues his battle with injury and Cesc Fabregas, Ivanovic and Filipe Luis are just one booking away from missing the Semi Final 1st Leg.

PSG Team News:

Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura are both unavailable for the visitors as they recover from respective injury problems, but Yohan Cabaye has not fully recovered from his thigh strain and if he passes a late fitness test looks certain to be involved in the starting lineup. Gregory van der Wiel and Marco Verratti are both just one booking away from missing the 1st Leg of the Semi Final.

Chelsea v PSG Head to Head Statistics

Wednesday night’s game from Stamford Bridge will become the 7th meeting over the years between the two clubs, of which Chelsea have won twice and PSG have won once and the remaining three games have finished all square.

As we can see from our head to head statistics table below, Chelsea do have a good record against PSG when playing with home advantage at Stamford Bridge and currently remain unbeaten against their visitors in two previous visits.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

13 Goals have been scored in the previous six matches played between the two clubs overall and this provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.16.

2 of those Goals have been scored in the previous two matches played between the two clubs at Stamford Bridge and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic for this game of 1.00.

Both sets of data seem to indicate that this game will see little in the way of goals scored and Under 2.5 Goals looking a stand out choice.

Chelsea v PSG Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Based on what we saw a few weeks ago at the Parc de Princes, this game does look a very difficult one to predict a confident winner from as both squads have some very special individuals who can make something happen from nothing.

However, Chelsea do have the all important home advantage and they do boast a very good record in Europe when playing at Stamford Bridge, so I do agree with the online bookmakers making Jose Mourinho’s side the clear favourites to win this one on Wednesday night.

However, PSG should not be under-estimated and with the club having gone very close to reaching the Semi Finals of this tournament in the past two season’s, could it be 3rd time lucky for the Ibrahimovic and Co ?

The average goals per game statistics are not expecting this match to see many in the way of goals scored, but I do believe we could see more than one and I just have a gut feeling that it is going to be the side from France who are the ones celebrating their place in the Semi Final since 2001.

As such my Banker prediction for this game is going to be PSG to Qualify as although Chelsea do have home advantage I do think PSG can be more than a match for them and with players like Cavani and Ibrahimovic leading the attack, the Chelsea defence is definitely going to be tested plenty in this one.

My Saver is going to be for a Correct Score of 1-0 to Chelsea, just in case PSG fail to secure that early goal they need and get caught on the counter attack as they press more players higher up the pitch the longer the game goes on.
