Southampton v Liverpool Preview, League Cup, Semi Final, 11th January 2017

Southampton have had a very average season by their standards so far in the premiership so will probably be looking forward to the distraction of this 1st leg semi final league cup fixture at home against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The hosts head into this game having lost their last three league matches on the bounce and although they did stop the bleeding so to speak with a 2-2 draw away against Norwich City in the FA Cup last time out, I very much doubt that any of the fans or the players will be particularly confident about turning their form around in this one.

Liverpool are having a very good season in contrast and are very strong contenders to win this trophy. It will be important for Jurgen Klopp’s side to obtain at least a 1 goal margin to take into the second leg in a fortnight’s time at Anfield Stadium, but with his players in great form at the moment it does look as if Southampton are going to be in for a difficult time of it.

The visitors have stuttered a bit lately in their last two matches played, the first blip came against struggling Sunderland who they drew 2-2 with in the league and that was followed by what was one of the shocks of the 3rd round of the FA Cup when despite home advantage they could only manage a 0-0 draw against Plymouth !

However, I expect the Liverpool players to respond to those two results in this match and for me the visitors do look good value at their current odds on offer to secure the win.

Southampton Team News :

The hosts will be without the services of Austin, Boufal, McCarthy, Hesketh, Targett and Pied for this one as they all continue to recover from respective injury related problems.

Jose Fonte handed in a transfer request recently and could be overlooked by manager Claude Puel who will be under pressure to deliver in this fixture if he is to keep his job.

Liverpool Team News :

The visitors will be without the services of Danny Ings, Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson for this game as they all continue to recover from respective injury related problems.

Philippe Coutinho has resumed training with the squad and is likely to make an appearance at some stage during the match and with Liverpool so close to winning a major trophy, I would expect manager Jurgen Klopp to field a reasonably strong side for this game.

Southampton v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

Wednesday night’s game from St Mary’s Stadium will become the 81st meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Southampton have won 21 times overall with 17 of those victories having came with home advantage.

Liverpool have managed to secure 39 victories overall with 14 of those having came away from home and with the club having had a much better season so far than Southampton, most people will expect Jurgen Klopp’s side to win this game.

As we can see from our head to head to head statistics table shown below, the last five recent meetings shows Liverpool with a slight advantage, having won two times, compared to Southampton having won one and the remaining two matches having finished all square.

20/03/16 PRL Southampton – Liverpool 3 : 2

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

216 Goals have been scored in the previous 80 meetings between the two clubs and this provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.70.

116 of those Goals have came in the 41 previous matches played at St Mary’s Stadium and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic of 2.83.

Based on both sets of data shown above it does seem to suggest that this game should see at least a couple of goals scored and the betting market Total Match Goals 2 or 3 looks a good option for this match.

Southampton v Liverpool Match Betting Odds Market

Southampton are having a poor season overall and having failed to win any of their previous four matches played in all competitions it’s difficult to make a case for them to win this game as their current odds on offer of 13/5 with Bet365 – Receive £200 Matched Bonus Bets when Registering a New Account clearly reflects.

The Draw is a current a best price of 12/5 with Coral – Bet £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets when Registering a New Account and does seem the best result that the hosts can manage here if Liverpool have a bit of an off day and could be worth getting something on this as your main cover bet.

Liverpool are the clear favourites to win this game at a current best odds of 5/4 with BetFred – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets when Registering a New Account and like myself, I would expect most people to see this as the value bet for this game.

Southampton v Liverpool Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Southampton seem to have lost their way a bit this season and look nothing like the side that we are all used to seeing over previous seasons. This game is huge for Southampton football club and a defeat in this 1st leg fixture could see their manager Claude Puel come under some serious pressure to hold onto his job.

The fact that Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request just goes to show that something is seriously wrong at the club at the moment and I for one don’t expect things to improve anytime soon until some major changes are made.

Liverpool will see this tournament as one that they can definitely win and as such I am expecting their manager to field a strong side for this 1st leg match on Wednesday night as he will want to take the pressure off his players for the 2nd leg match scheduled to take place at Anfield in two weeks time.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip for this game is going to be for Liverpool to Win as the Liverpool players are having a good season overall and although they have hit a couple of blips in the road over the past couple of weeks, I still see them good enough to win this match and add more misery to the Southampton fans.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip for this game will be for Liverpool attacking midfielder Adam Lallana to Score the 1st Goal of the Game as with 4 of his 7 goals this season having been the first goals of the game, he looks great odds to get on here.
