Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Preview, Championship, Saturday 11th January 2014

Sheffield Wednesday are a side who are facing some difficulties this year, with them usually being a side who once challenged for honors it comes as a shame to see them struggling close to the relegation zone. Wednesday did however suffer a terrible month in November with only winning one falling to defeat three times at the hands of Derby County, Huddersfield Town and Blackpool. December got slightly better but still lost two as the month see five fixtures in total. Being a side whose results are so unpredictable right now this game could go either way with Sheffield Wednesday at least being at home which should give them some confidence as they look to pull away from the relegation zone.

Leeds United are a side who have won the Premiership and these days we see them battling it out in the Championships after going up and down too many divisions to count. Saturdays game is an important one for the away side as they look to continue with the pressure on the above seven teams. A win could see them climb into the Playoffs briefly which is always worth the build in confidence. Promotion for Leeds United will look more likely coming from the Playoffs if they do manage to build a run of consistent wins, sadly right now they come into this game on the back of three defeats which includes the shocking loss to Rochdale who reside two divisions below Leeds which has now seen the Championship side out of the countries most prestigious cup.

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds County Team News

Sheffield Wednesday News:

Sheffield Wednesdays full time strikers are not up to the task right now but their blushes are luckily being saves by Sunderland loanee Conner Wickham who has notched seven goals in the last ten outings. There are a few goals scattered out here and there as they are shared sparingly among the rest of the squad. Midfielder Michail Antonio is the other other player worth a mention having scored three goals in his last sixteen games for the club.

Leeds News

Leeds United are happy to see club top scorer Ross McCormack continue his run of fine form so far this season, having scored himself seventeen goals in twenty four matches in all domestic competitions. The closest contender to the Scot is English striker Matt Smith who has bagged himself seven goals so far this season in the twenty one games played.

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Head to Head Statistics

The last 5 head to head statistics see it pretty even apart from Sheffield Wednesdays slight edge with the away win back in 2007. But we need to look at the 62 games played in total over the years where we have seen Leeds United win 29 to Sheffield Wednesdays 18. We also see 15 draws in total with 9 of them with Leeds United playing away from home.

During these years with the 62 games played we have seen a total of 183 goals scored which is giving us an average of 2.95 goals per game. Looking at the past few years though we can see that total slightly decrease. Hopefully on Saturday we will see an exciting game with at least a few goals scored if lucky.

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Recent Form (Left to Right)

Sheffield Wednesday: D W D D L

Leeds: L L L D D

On paper in the last five games we can see it is Sheffield Wednesday who are the better team in form here. But being as they are twelve places below Leeds United in the league who can only put the away side Leeds with the advantage for this game even though they are away from home.

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Looking at the head to head statistics you could easily go for a draw, but with Sheffield Wednesday no longer being the side they were my choice would be to back the away side here. Granted Leeds United have suffered to some poor results lately with the more recent in the FA Cup to League Two side Rochdale. This result see Leeds exit early much to the disappointment to fans and their manager.

Sheffield Wednesday only have one player capable of threatening the Leeds United goal on a dangerous level, but can the Sunderland loan striker Connor Wickham continue to grab himself the goals if his temporary team mates don’t pull themselves together to save their dismal season. Leeds United in a sense are also in the same boat in regards to putting all their eggs into one basket, theirs being the Scottish international Ross McCormack who is very much on fire in front of goal right now, and will feature in one of my predictions below.

So as for my predictions I can honestly see Sheffield Wednesday struggle here with their confidence on the low, and with Leeds United also in bad form it must be now if they themselves want to continue to push for a Playoff finish. So for my first prediction I will be going for a Leeds United win and for Ross McCormack to score anytime. If Wickham is playing well and Sheffield Wednesday do grab a goal I can still see Leeds United winning this game which will conclude my predictions for Saturdays lunchtime game.
