Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Preview, Primera La Liga, Saturday 11th January 2014

Atletico Madrid continue to put pressure on top side Barcelona and with Saturdays game approaching what better chance to put themselves three points clear if they do manage the win. Having played so well this season at home having only experienced wins at the Vicente Stadium, this fact alone will have Barcelona worried that losing here at the weekend could dent their own title challenge. With the Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois in sensational form while on loan to Atletico Madrid for the third season has prompted Atletico Madrid bosses to start the ball rolling in an attempt to make the move permanent. The 21 year old joined Chelsea from Genk in 2011 but has been on loan to the La Liga side since David De Gea joined Manchester United.

Barcelona now once more sit atop the La Liga after improving on their goal difference in recent weeks having scored an impressive eleven goals and conceding just three in the last three league games. This feat allowed them to take first place off of Saturdays opponents Atletico Madrid, a team they must beat on Saturday to continue the fight to win the La Liga title. Atletico Madrid have not lost or drawn at home this season so for Barcelona to win will not be an easy task. A win on Saturday will see them jump ahead by three points and leave Atletico Madrid to worry about Real Madrid who will be two points behind if they themselves manage to win at the weekend.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Team News

Atletico Madrid Team News:

Atletico Madrid’s only injury worry coming into the weekends game is Spaniard Mario Suarez who is recovering from a knee injury and we are unsure when the midfielder will be back. The 26 year old has featured seven times this season so with him out wont be a huge worry for coach Simeone who has plenty of world class players as cover. There is however a lot of talk in the January transfer window in regards to seeing in form players such as Koke leave to join Manchester Uniteds failing season, as well as Diego Costa who has been linked to many clubs in recent weeks. The 25 year old is in his prime right now and has scored an impressive 19 goals in 18 games so far this season.

Barcelona Team News:

Barcelona are without two players for Saturdays game with the first being Spanish goalkeeper Oier who has an injured wrist. He hasn’t yet played a game this year so it isn’t a huge worry. The other injured player is youngster Jonathan dos Santos who has suffered crucial knee ligaments back in October and will unlikely not feature again this season. Good news however is that club favourite Lionel Messi has returned from injury with a bang and was bought on for his first game back in the 60th minute against Getafe and in the 90th minute grabbed two quick goals which added to Fabregas’s own brace.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Head to Head Statistics

In the last 5 head to head statistics we can see it is Barcelona who are the better side here, and nothing changes when we look deeper into the 40 games played in total. Barcelona have the winning advantage with 19 wins to Atletico Madrid’s 13. With the remaining 8 games ending as a draw. Barcelona have won 7 times away from home as well as drawing 4 times so we know they can do it in Saturdays game.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 40 games played previously we have seen an impressive 159 goals scored which is giving us an average of 4 goals per game. Yet in recent years that would have dropped slightly as Atletico Madrid have somewhat become more of a challenge to Barcelona having become a better club over the years.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Recent Form (Left to Right)

Atletico Madrid: D W W W W

Barcelona: W W W W W

I’m only going to judge the advantage here for the last 5 head to head statistics as both teams are flying high in the league right now. Barcelona do win this advantage here having won 5 straight where as Atletico Madrid drew their last game against Valencia in the Copa del Rey.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This has to be the game every Spanish football fan has been waiting for, the top two are on joint points and a winner here will set themselves in serious contention for the La Liga title. Atletico Madrid have not lost or drawn at home this season and the place has become a fortress that has urged Madrid on to so many victories. Barcelona however are not a mid table side and are hardened champions, so a victory away from home here on Saturday will not be something unachievable.

Atletico Madrid however will be seeing this match as a chance to put themselves three points clear as they look to mount a serious challenge for their first La Liga title in some time. Seeing Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate the lime light for so long they will feel it is their time and add another name into the mix for title contenders. There is a lot of transfer talk surrounding Madrid’s midfielder Koke and striker Costa but if we are honest I cannot see them wanting to let two of their key players leave in January with them is such a prominent position in the league.

As for predictions I can see a draw being a popular choice for Saturdays game, but I feel it could go either way. Barcelona have dropped some silly points this season even though its been a rare occasion. But with Messi’s return I can see him inspiring the away side to a victory with a goal. The other I am looking at is for Atletico Madrid to win and both teams to score, which is well on the cards I am sure.
