Accrington Stanley v Portsmouth Preview, 2013 League 2, Saturday 10th August 2013

Accrington Stanley have started this season with mixed results having lost their first league game to Newport in embarrassing style in a heavy 4-1 defeat away from home, but then bounced back to beat Championship side Middlesbrough in a thrilling 2-1 win in the Capitol One Cup putting out a competition former winner. With going down 1-0 early in the match it wasn’t until the 38th minute when Accrington leveled with a looping header by Carver which was cleared after the ball had crossed the line which was luckily spotted by the linesman who gave the deserved goal. It wasn’t until late in the game in the 82nd minute with a drilling goal by Mingoia which had to go through a crowd full of players to hit the back of the net.

Not a great start by Portsmouth either losing their first league game and exiting the Capital One Cup early with a disappointing loss to Bournemouth after playing so well early on and even after conceding the early goal. But it will be the heavy 4-1 loss to Oxford that has upset manager Guy Whittingham who refuses to panic just yet as Portsmouth were the early season favourites for promotion back into League 1. Portsmouth were lucky not to concede more against Oxford after going down to 10 men early on when they were losing 2-1 and before the sending off they looked like fighting their way back into the match.

Accrington Stanley v Portsmouth Team News

Accrington Stanley Team News:

Michael Richardson will be a name on most Accrington Stanley’s fans lips this season with the young Newcastle United defensive midfielder looking to gain experience and make a name for himself on the season long loan. With other new signings like Piero Mingoia, Josh Windass and Shay McCartan joining on free transfers from Championship clubs it will be them also looking to build up their portfolio after being released by their former clubs. Manager James Beattie only took the managers seat in May after retiring and he has been very busy letting 11 players leave the club, 10 of them being free transfers and other Leam Richardson who like his manager also hanging up his boots after joining the club in 2011 under former manager John Coleman.

Portsmouth Team News:

Manager Guy Whittingham has been very busy in the transfer market this year seeing a total of 12 new signings join the club with an additional 4 who have come up from the under 18’s and reserves. Fans will be happy with the new names on the team sheet with the likes of Simon Ferry from Swindon who gets to link up again with other new signing Joe Devera also from Swindon. There seems to be a theme forming here as four other signings from 2 clubs such as Stevenage Boroughs N’Gala and Patrick Agyemang with the other club being Hull who were recently promoted to the Premiership who let both Danny East and Sonny Bradley go on free transfers this summer.

Who Has The Advantage?

The funny thing is there is no recent results for these two sides meeting each other but I was so glad to find some ancient results dating back to 1925 with all 3 previous meetings being in the prestigious FA Cup, and as you can see Portsmouth came out the better team but for this situation I don’t think its fair to put any team down with the advantage with the above head to head statistics.

Average Goals Per Game?

With the 12 goals scored in the 3 results shown above I just wonder how much fun it would of been scoring with a pig skin football haha, but anyway it gives us an average goals per game of 4.

Accrington Stanley v Portsmouth Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

I’m a little stumped here with which team to predict for the win, but with Accrington beating Championship side Middlesbrough recently in the Capital One Cup I can see their confidence flying high coming into this game against a side who haven’t won a game this season including preseason.
