France v Portugal Preview, Euro 2016, Final 10th July 2016

Euro 2016 comes to an end on Sunday afternoon, as France look to claim their first major honours since winning Euro 2000. The match then was a cagey affair where France bested Italy in extra time thanks to David Trezeguet’s golden goal in the 103rd minute, and the French may well be expecting a similarly tight game against a defensive and organised Portugal team which has reached the final having won 1 game in regular time in the whole tournament.

France have not been at their very best during this tournament, but did show a fine display in their semi final victory against Germany with striker Antoine Greizmann having had a huge impact in that win and he will no doubt be one player that the Portugal defence will have to keep a tight leash on if they are to win this game.

Portugal have also not really set the world alight during their matches so far during this tournament and it took them until the semi final to actually win a game during the 90mins. Cristiano Ronaldo was pivotal to that 2-0 victory against Wales, scoring one and setting up the second and he definitely looks the main danger for the France defence to contend with.

France Team News:

France look likely to start with the same side that put Germany to the sword 2-0 in the semi final stage of the tournament which shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise. Paul Pogba has yet to really get going yet and I would expect him to have a big game in this final along with Antoine Greizmann.

Portugal Team News:

Portugal have been boosted by the news that defender Pepe has passed a fitness test and is available for this game on Sunday night and should join Carvalho in the starting lineup now that he has served his one match suspension. Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to continue where he left on in the semi final with another world class performance and is certainly the main threat that France need to contain.

France v Portual Head to Head Statistics:

Sunday night’s match from Stade de France in Saint-Denis will become the 25th meeting between the two nations over recent years and as we can see from our head to head statistics table below, it has been France who have dominated the results having won all of the previous five matches played.

04/09/15 FRI Portugal – France 0 : 1
11/10/14 FRI France – Portugal 2 : 1
05/07/06 WOC Portugal – France 0 : 1
25/04/01 FRI France – Portugal 4 : 0
28/06/00 EUC France – Portugal 2 : 1 (AET)

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

77 Goals have been scored during those previous 24 matches played between the two nations and this generates us an average goals per game statistic of 3.21 which suggests we should see a few goals scored in this game and total match goals 2 or 3 looks a great choice.

French manager Didier Deschamps will be looking to the likes of Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann to secure the silverware, with the latter almost certain to finish as the tournament’s top goalscorer having scored an impressive 6 goals so far.

Throughout the tournament France have played exciting, attacking football and there’s been over 2.5 goals in 3 of their 5 games. bet365 are quoting 8/5 (2.60) that there will be more than 2.5 goals in the final.

France v Portugal Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

France have managed to score quite a few goals during this tournament without really having played anything like their best and if as expected, the players do turn it on for this game, I would expect France to win this match in comfortable fashion.

We only have to look at the history of the last ten matches to see that Portugal have failed to beat France in any of them and yes they do have the world class Cristiano Ronaldo in their side which does provide them with a bit of hope, but he will probably start to throw his toys out of his pram once his side fall behind and that won’t go down too well with his team mates.

Should the teams fail to distinguish themselves from one another in regular time, bet365 are offering odds on the method of victory for the eventual champions. Those who fancy Portugal to win in extra time can back them to do so at a huge 20/1 (21.00), whilst the French are 10/1 (11.00) to snatch victory in extra time. If the teams are still at a deadlock after 120 minutes, bet365 are 10/1 (11.00) about either team lifting the trophy after penalties.

Euro 2016 Final Method of Victory Odds

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip for this game is going to be for France to Win as for me they have the much better side on paper, are well organised in every position on the pitch and head into this final having sent the germans packing.

Portugal will obviously give it everything and could probably manage to score a goal during at some point during this game, but it does look extremely unlikely that they have what it takes to win this final.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip will be Paul Pogba to open up the first goal of the game as I am probably expecting the Portugal defence to try and contain Antoine Greizmann as France’s main threat and this could open the door for Pogba to punish them on route to a comfortable France victory.

With that in mind, it’s worth noting that bet365 are still offering their fantastic Penalty Payback promotion for the final – back either team in the ‘To Win Outright’ market and if they’re beaten on penalties bet365 will refund your stake!

That’s not all, bet365 are also still offering their Euros Bore Draw Money Back promotion, which will refund all losing bets on selected markets if the game finishes 0-0 in 90 minutes:
