Stoke City v Liverpool Preview, Premiership, Sunday 9th August 2015.

Stoke City proved to be tough opponents last season and enjoyed the fact that they finished in a respectable ninth position. In their last five Premiership games last season they did face Liverpool at home and did manage the unthinkable by thrashing them by six goals to one. The clubs win/lose ratio was pretty close to equal which will certainly be something to improve on in manager Mark Hughes eyes. Stoke City haven’t had the best of pre-seasons with them losing three of their last five games, all of which were away from home and against lesser opponents. They played six friendlies in total while only winning twice and losing the remaining four.

Liverpool last season experienced some up’s and downs and did at one point see themselves challenging for a top four finish and Champions League qualification. Yet some serious poor performances see their demise later on and did eventually finish the season very poorly including the heavy defeat to Sundays opponents Stoke City. One of their main issues last season was the fact that striker Daniel Sturridge spent most of his time on the treatment table, and often found themselves struggling for goals without any prolific goalscorer. Mario Ballotelli failed to impress while Ricky Lambert wasn’t given enough chances to shine. This season however they have managed to sign a few front men so who knows what they have to offer come the end of the season.

Stoke City Team News:

Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross was injured this month and wont be back until early October. Marc Wilson (ankle) and Marko Arnautovic (thigh) are both doubtful for the Liverpool game due to being injured early this month. Wilson Palacios suffered a hamstring strain back in early July and his return is currently unknown. Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has only spent £8.7 million so far this summer with most of that fee being paid to Hannover 96 for Joselu. Glen Johnson has signed for the club from Liverpool via a free transfer while also snapping up experienced goalkeeper Shay Given. Marco van Ginkel has joined from Chelsea on loan, with him being apart of the deal seeing Begovic leave to join Chelsea.

Liverpool Team News:

Daniel Sturridge once again finds himself injured after suffering a hip injury back in April. He should be due back early September which isn’t as bad as last season for the England international. John Flanagan is out until the end of the year with a knee injury while Joe Allen has a hamstring strain and wont be back until the end of this month. This season Liverpool have signed some much needed fire power with Christian Benteke and Danny Ings being added to the ranks. Nathaniel Clyne and Roberto Firmino have also signed this summer and all together have taken Liverpool’s transfer spending close to £80 million.

Stoke City v Liverpool City Head to Head Statistics:

In the past five head to head encounters you would come to expect better from a club such as Liverpool, and although they have won three of the five games the two they have lost away from home can be seen as very embarrassing. In total we have recorded 94 fixtures between the two clubs, where as expected Liverpool come out on top with 48 wins and 19 loses. Meaning the remaining 27 games have been seen a draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 94 games played between these two Premiership clubs, we have seen a total of 236 goals scored which is going to give us an average of 2.5 goals per game. Looking at the above table however I am not sure how we can go with that average considering it’s either hit or miss when we could expect 1 or 8 goals scored during the game! yet the below option could always be seen as a good option and the best odds found for that can be seen here.

Liverpool have been in far better form during the pre-season break having won five and drawn once out of the six games played. Where as Stoke City have lost on four occasions and won just twice against much lower quality opposition. Stoke City have had the better results in previous years especially with the most recent 6 – 1 victory at the end of last season.

Stoke City v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Stoke City enjoyed a very good season last term and came in a very respectable ninth position and were often seen as one of the tougher opponents to face by the big four. They lost and won against Liverpool last season and can take some confidence knowing that their record at home is very acceptable. Yet with the poor pre-season the club have experienced I am not sure how high the teams confidence is when coming into the fixture on Sunday.

Liverpool will want revenge for the last time they faced Stoke City away from home, especially seeing as though they were hammered six goals to nil even with the now departed Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Pre-season has also been pretty solid for the club having won on five occasions and also drawing the other against Malaysia XI. That said Liverpool haven’t exactly tested themselves this pre-season with the toughest opponents being that of Swindon Town who ply their trade in League One.

Predictions wise you cant help but lean towards Liverpool here even though their recent results against Stoke City have been poor. With the clubs summer signings taken into account I do feel a Liverpool win will be on the cards, and with this I will go for a Benteke goal to sweeten the deal. The other prediction I am going for will be based off of Stoke City’s recent home results against Sundays opponents. Although instead of the win I will be going for both teams to score and for the result to end as a draw.
