Chelsea v PSG Preview, Champions League, Last 16 2nd Leg, Wednesday 9th March 2016.

Home side Chelsea do come into this Champions League fixture on the back of a 1st leg defeat to PSG, yet take some encouragement in the fact that they did manage an away goal in the French capital with the match ending 2 – 1 on the night. It will only take a 1 – 0 win to secure passage to the last eight of the competition yet something tells me its not going to be so simple for the English Champions.

Although they did lost in France we do see Chelsea on their best run of form having won three and drawing more recently to complete the last five fixtures played in all competitions. They almost completed four wins on the trot yet Stoke City striker Mame Biram Diouf managed to secure an equalizer just five minutes from the end of ninety minutes which see Chelsea stay in tenth place in the league.

French Champions PSG have managed to slip up a couple of times recently having lost away from home to third place Olympique Lyonnais 2 – 1 and again more recently at home in the goalless draw to Montpellier. Those results could effect PSG coming into this game with them having never won against Chelsea away from home.

The odds are so close to call right now and we do see PSG only slightly take the advantage and become the bookmakers favourites to win this game. As said there is hardly a fraction in it and if the Ligue 1 Champions do play to their best then certainly a last eight draw is something that is on the cards at the end of Wednesday night.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea have confirmed that club captain John Terry once again misses a game with him still yet to recover from an ongoing hamstring problem. Terry has now missed the last five games in all competitions after he had to be substituted in the 5 – 1 demolition of Newcastle United back in February.

Diego Costa could feature against PSG having missed the game against Stoke City due to a tendon problem, and has managed to train with the squad ahead of Wednesdays game. Winger Pedro is also a doubt for Wednesday game due to him having a slight hamstring issue after this weekend.

PSG Team News:

Its going to be risky business for PSG in regards to players Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi as both have been out with a groin and thigh injury respectfully. It will go down to the finals minutes we are told as both look to take fitness tests in England to see if they can play at all. Verratti’s groin injury was deemed serious and was checked over by the national sides chief medic in Paris previously.

Chelsea v PSG Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters between these two sets of champions is is Chelsea who just come out on top with that extra win seen last year in the International Champions Cup during pre-season. PSG have yet to win in London against Chelsea yet are favourites on the night even though they could be missing a couple of important players.

The two clubs have met on nine occasions with Chelsea just out in front with three wins, where as PSG have won twice and also managed to secure four draws leading way back until 2004. PSG do have the aggregate advantage and only need to score once to seriously apply the pressure on Chelsea who will then need to win 3 – 1 to qualify in 90 minutes.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the nine games played out between the two clubs we have seen a total of 22 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 2.4 which is a pretty good option for Wednesdays game in London. I am going to go with the below selection as that always seems to be promising when these two meet.

Chelsea v PSG Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Chelsea: D W W W L

In the last five games played in all competitions both clubs have the same form score on paper yet we must consider where they both are in their domestic leagues right now. Granted Chelsea have played far better in recent months and are at home for this 2nd leg, yet are not considered the favourites to win.

Chelsea v PSG Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea are 2 – 1 down on aggregate yet only need to score and not concede on the night to secure safe passage into the last eight. Yet that will not be easy especially with a few players in doubt for the clash due to injury. The Draw has been seen on four occasions in the past between these two titans and is always a possibility on Wednesday night as PSG slightly come out as favourites. Chelsea v PSG Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Champions League action Wednesday night comes live on BT Sports Europe and can be viewed in High Definition. We witness Chelsea take on French Champions PSG in hopes of changing the 2 – 1 deficit to a winning result which see’s them progress into the last eight of the competition. The draw against Stoke City at the weekend will not of helped their confidence, especially with the equalizer coming so late on.

it could of been four wins on the trot for the London based club and with PSG failing to win their game could of been enough to nudge the win in their favour. Due to a few injury worries we are still wondering on the availability of Pedro and Diego Costa and may not find out until late on if the pair are playing. As we already know Chelsea are light at the back with a number of defensive injuries, and Terry’s ongoing hamstring injury certainly wont be helping.

PSG themselves have managed to drop points recently and have allowed Monaco and Lyon to close the gap ever so slightly, but lets try not to panic too much as nineteen points between them and third certainly wont be a worry for the French repeating Champions. We did also see PSG cruise through to the next round of the Coupe de France which is due to be played later this month against Lorient.

PSG are still in with a chance of winning multiple competitions this season although I am sure the Champions League winners trophy is no doubt top of their priority list. They never seem to be able to manage to beat top sides such as Real Madrid and Barcelona who continue to dominate alike Bayern Munich of Germany.

My predictions for this game is pretty much either going to be playing safe or pure guess work as lets be honest here the result could go either way regardless of who is set as the bookmakers favourites on the night. My banker prediction is going to be for 2 to 3 goals scored on the night which should be a solid option when looking at the previous results and goals per game average.

The next I am going for is an anytime goalscorer selection, in which we could go for either of the teams leading strikers with Diego Costa if he plays, as well as PSG and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Me personally I am going to go for the PSG striker as we all know he does have an impressive record when playing against England and its teams.
