Hull City v Sunderland Preview, FA Cup, Sunday 9th March 2014

Hull City manager Steve Bruce will be hoping his side have the advantage for Sunday with being at home and Sunderland’s confidence taking a knock after seeing defeat in the Capital One Cup final last week to Manchester City. Hull City also come into this match on the back of a shock home to defeat to Newcastle United. That’s not to say the shock was due to the defeat, it was in fact the manner of the defeat being so heavy and although Davies pulled it back to 2 – 1 at half time it didn’t faze Newcastle who eventually went on to score two more ending the game 4 – 1.

Sunderland spent this week getting over their first chance of silverware this year and what will hurt the most is that they went 1 – 0 up with a Borini goal against a Manchester City side who have pretty much been dominating teams this season. With the blue side of Manchester getting very nervous it took until the 55th minute for Yaya Toure to scream home the equalizer and then it was over for Sunderland after their opponents then went and grabbed another one minute later with another great goal but this time from Samir Nasri. The game eventually ended 3 – 1 to City who earned their first of a potential many this season.

Hull City Team News:

Hull City have a few injuries coming into this game with two of them being the Republic side of Ireland duo Robert Brady and Paul McShane who are out with groin and ankle issues. Next is Northern Ireland defender Joe Dudgeon who has been out since June with a serious knee injury.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland have only one injury in Keiran Westwood who has been out since November with a should problem and no idea on his return. Luckily enough Vito Mannone has stepped in and stepped up to take the pressures of being in goal and has so far settled with the 17 appearances since Westwood was sidelined.

Hull City v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics

In the last 5 head to head battles we see that it is Sunderland who just come out winners with 3 wins and 2 loses and even if we looker deeper into the 8 games played in total we can see 6 wins by Sunderland to Hull City’s 2. Hull City’s victories have been in the last two encounters which will prove in this instance that Steve Bruce’s team have severely improved since their return to the Premier League.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 8 games played in total we can see 18 goals scored which is giving us an average of 2.25 goals per game. Although looking at the above statistics you wouldn’t feel that average was at all that close. But with both clubs playing very well in the FA Cup you can only hope to see an exciting game come Sunday in this quarter final.

Hull City v Sunderland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Hull City: L W W D L

Sunderland: L L W L W

Although the above form shows Hull City as slightly better we can clearly see by looking at the Premier League table that they are clearly the side in better form here as Sunderland still sit in a dangerous position of 18th. Sunderland have played well in the cups however and did get to the League Cup Final in which they lost to Manchester City 3 – 1 at the weekend.

Hull City v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

FA Cup quarter final exciting comes on ITV 1 just after lunch on Sunday with Hull City playing host to Capital One Cup runners up Sunderland who although are playing well in the cups are actually very much suffering in the Premiership in the relegation zone.

Hull City are the favourites for this game and if they do manage a win are preying for the only easier tie out of the last eight being Sheffield United or Charlton Athletic. They could potentially face Arsenal or Everton and could also feature against Manchester City as I cannot see Wigan Athletic beating City again in this cup anytime soon.

So for my predictions for this third FA Cup tie of the weekend I feel and plan to back Steve Bruce’s side for the win. I also feel Sunderland will crumble much like they did against Manchester City and can see that having a very damaging effect on their already low confidence. So my first will be for both teams to score and Hull City to win, with the other seeing a total goals of 2 – 3 in the game on Sunday.
