Manchester United v Sheffield United Preview, FA Cup, 3rd Round, Saturday 9th January 2016

Manchester United are not having the best of season’s on the domestic front and are not looking good at all to finish in a top four place which will guarantee them UEFA Champions League football next season, so this tournament could be taken seriously by the club as they will definitely want to be in with a chance of getting something positive out of this season.

Manchester United have won the FA Cup an impressive 11 previous times, their last capture of the coveted trophy coming back in the 2003-04 season, under Alex Ferguson Manchester United won the FA Cup an incredible 6 times during the 90’s and although the current side doesn’t compare even in the slightest to that side back then, fans will be hoping to see their side have a good run in the tournament this season.

Sheffield United are also not having the best of season’s either on the domestic front down in League One of the football league and will also see this competition as a real chance to add some much needed coffers to the chest the further the club manages to go.

Sheffield United have won the FA Cup on 4 seperate occasion’s over the years, but you have to search all the way back to 1925 to find the last time the club won the trophy, which does go to show that the club has been struggling to compete with the top clubs for many years now and this should be reflected in the result come Saturday evening as although many people might want Sheffield United to cause a shock victory in this game, I don’t really see that happening.

Manchester United Team News:

The hosts will be missing Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw for this game as they are all long-term absentees, while Phil Jones and Ashley Young are both regarded as doubts, having picked up knocks against Swansea City last time out.

Sheffield United Team News:

The visitors will be without Craig Alcock for this game as the player has now joined Doncaster Rovers for an undisclosed fee and with the defeat against Peterborough United last time out manager Niger Adkins will probably be looking to make some changes for this game.

Manchester United v Sheffield United Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday evening’s game from Old Trafford Stadium will become the 81st  meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Manchester United have won 38 times with 26 of those having came with home advantage where as Sheffield United have managed 29 victories, with just 9 of those having came away from home.

As we can see from our head to head to head statistics table shown below, recent meetings between the two clubs shows Manchester United holding a commanding advantage over Sheffield United having won all previous five matches played.

17/04/07 PRL Manchester United – Sheffield United 2 : 0
18/11/06 PRL Sheffield United – Manchester United 1 : 2
06/12/93 PRL Sheffield United – Manchester United
0 : 3
17/08/93 PRL Manchester United – Sheffield United 3 : 0

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

243 Goals have been scored in the previous 80 meetings between the two clubs and this provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 3.04.

125 of those Goals have came in the 40 previous matches played at Old Trafford Stadium and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic of 3.13.

Based on both sets of data shown above, it does seem to indicate that this game should see at least a few goals scored on Saturday evening and betting markets like Over 2.5 Goals and Total Match Goals 2 or 3 could be the ones to be on here.

Manchester United v Sheffield United Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Manchester United bounced back to winning ways last weekend with a 2-1 win against Swansea City and that victory should now see all of the United players now having some confidence restored after a string of defeats that has really made their chances of securing a top four finish in the league this season being very difficult to obtain.

United are expected to win this game on Saturday evening as with home advantage and a squad much stronger than what Sheffield United have to offer, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to see the online bookmakers having them priced up as the clear odds on favourites.

Sheffield United are well known for pulling off some giant killings in cup competitions before and with this competition shocks can and do happen, so the visitors will obviously fancy their chances despite the online bookmakers saying otherwise.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip is going to be for Martial to Score & Manchester United to Win as I can’t really see the Sheffield United defence being able to keep United from scoring at least a couple in this game, especially at having conceded three times against Peterborough United last time out.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip is going to be for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to score the first goal of the game as with a goal against Swansea City in that 2-1 victory, the England International will definitely be hungry to add more goals to his season’s tally.
