Scotland v Poland Preview, Euro 2016 Qualification, Thursday 8th October 2015

Scotland head into this match knowing that anything but a victory would see them once again miss out on a major tournament final and after two disappointing defeats against Georgia and Germany recently, it does seem that most of the Scottish players have already given up and it will be interesting to see how they respond in this game on Thursday night.

Poland will also be keen to win this game, as although they do currently occupy the 2nd automatic qualification place in the group table, the Republic of Ireland are right behind them back in 3rd position and still right there in the hunt for a place in France next summer, so I am expecting Poland to head into this game on the front foot and try to put Scotland to the sword as early as they can.

Scotland Team News:

Graham Dorrans has replaced Kevin McDonald in the Scotland squad after the Wolves player suffered a lower back injury, while Celtic’s Charlie Mulgrew (thigh) is a major doubt. Strachan also has concerns over Watford winger Ikechi Anya (muscular problem) and captain Darren Fletcher (knock).

Fletcher’s West Brom team-mate James Morrison is suspended for the Poland game but could face Gibraltar in the final qualifier, providing he is able overcome an ankle complaint.

Poland Team News:

No fresh injuries for the visitors so expect to see a similar lineup to the side that smashed Gibraltar 8-1 last time out.

Robert Lewandowski is the main threat for the Scottish defence to contend with and the Bayern Munich striker will be looking to continue his excellent form in front of goal recently by getting his name on the score-sheet during this one.

Scotland v Poland Head to Head Statistics:

Thursday night’s game from Hampden Park Stadium will become the 7th meeting between the two nations over the years, of which Scotland and Poland have both managed one win each with the remaining four matches having finished all square.

As we can see from our head to head statistics table below which shows the last five matches between the two countries, there has been only once where both sides have not scored and with such an important game that both need to win, I fully expect that trend to continue.

14/10/14 ECQ Poland – Scotland 2 : 2
05/03/14 FRI Poland – Scotland 0 : 1
25/04/01 FRI Poland – Scotland
1 : 1
18/05/90 FRI Scotland –  Poland 1 : 1
13/10/65 WQE Scotland – Poland 1 : 2

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

14 Goals have been scored in the previous 6 meetings between the two countries and this provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of exactly 2.33.

5 of those Goals have came in the 2 previous matches played at Hampden Park Stadium and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic of 2.50.

Based on both sets of data shown above the numbers do seem to indicate that this game should see more than a couple of goals scored on Thursday night and Total Match Goals 2 or 3 and Over 2.5 Goals both look appealing from a betting point of view.

Scotland v Poland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Scotland will no doubt throw everything at Poland during this game in an attempt to keep hopes alive of making it to the Finals in France next summer, but I just don’t see this Scotland square being anywhere near good enough to beat Poland in this match, despite having home advantage.

Some people might disagree with me, but with the way Robert Lewandowski is playing at the moment for Bayern Munich he looks almost certain to get at least one goal during this game and I suppose the best result I can give Scotland achieving is probably a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.

Poland will be keeping a firm eye on how Republic of Ireland are getting on at home to Germany, but can pretty much guarantee their place in the Finals next summer with a convincing win on Thursday night and I don’t expect them to disappoint as Scotland have lost their last two games in the group, one being against a very average Georgia side.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip for this match is going to be for this game to see plenty in the way of goals scored with the Over 2.5 Goals looking a stand out choice.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip is going to be Robert Lewandowski to open the scoring as with the form the Bayern Munich striker is in at the moment, he has more than a valid chance of getting his name on the score-sheet come Thurdsay night.
