England v Switzerland Preview, Euro 2016 Qualification, Tuesday 9th September 2015.

It was an expected routine win for England on Saturday and the scoreline was rather kind considering the talent England had out on show. That said it was clear to see manager Roy Hodgson was allowing the first team regulars a break for Tuesdays tougher game against Switzerland, and instead used some fringe England stars looking to impress. Slovenia were at first thought of as the toughest team England should face in Group E, with Switzerland being a close second after their recent rise up the FIFA rankings. But that looks the other way round now as Slovenia now seem out of the picture with Switzerland set to finish in second place behind England. With only three games left to play and already six points clear of Switzerland, we do see England already qualify with only Switzerland left in the way, as Estonia and Lithuania are of little threat to Roy Hodgson’s men.

After Switzerland’s impressive win over Slovenia on Saturday, they are now the side who look more likely to finish in second place, which is an automatic qualification position. A win over England on Tuesday could give them some hope of actually finishing top, but lets be honest it is very unlikely their opponents will slip up against Estonia and Lithuania. Switzerland have England’s most recent opponents, San Marino, at home next month which will no doubt be an easy fixture. They then travel to Estonia for their final Group E match. Even if Switzerland do lose to England at Wembley on Tuesday they are still favourites now to complete the group in second place. As I cannot see them slipping up to Estonia even though they themselves are currently in third.

England Team News:

England and Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the squad after being an unused substitute during Saturdays game against San Marino. The actual injury has not yet been disclosed but could see Swansea player Jonjo Shelvey grabbing another start after playing on Saturday. The main news however is that of captain Wayne Rooney and the fact he needs just one goal to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s scoring record.

Switzerland Team News:

Switzerland played extremely poor for a majority of the match on Saturday, with the home side going 2 – 0 down by the 48th minute. Things were looking bad for the side who were expected to do far better in the group, but then something changed when two substitutions were made with Drmic coming on for Dzemaili, and then Stocker for Seferovic. It took until the 80th minute for Switzerland’s first goal when Drmic slotted home, four minutes later fellow sub Stocker netted the equalizer. It was deep into injury time however, when Drmic grabbed his second of the game and of course the winner.

England v Switzerland Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we have seen England pretty much dominate with four wins and a draw to their name. In total the two nations have met on thirteen occasions where Switzerland have only won the once, way back in 1981 during a World Cup Qualifier. England however have won eight and then drawn the remaining four.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the thirteen games played out between these two sides we have seen a total of 39 goals scored. This is going to give us a solid goals per game average of 3. That wouldn’t be a bad selection for Tuesdays game although I am thinking between two of three as a safety option.

England: W W D D W

Switzerland: W W W D W

The above table will show that it is Switzerland who are just out in front in regards to the teams winning form, however you would still have to look a little deeper only to see it is easily England who are the superior side with such an impressive run of games without a loss and a hat-full of wins.

England v Switzerland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

International action this Tuesday will feature home side England verses Switzerland in the first verses second table clash. If England do win on Tuesday they will see themselves as winners of the group even though they did already qualify on Saturday after their 6 – 0 victory over San Marino. Switzerland have not yet guaranteed qualification although they could with a rare win over England, something the bookmakers are not seeing as too likely, especially if they play like they did for the first hour against Slovenia at the weekend.

England come into this game having not lost a game since way back in the Brazilian World Cup Group stages last year, it is now twelve games since their 2 – 1 loss to Uruguay last year and have gone from strength to strength and even allowed some fringe players to play against the likes of San Marino. However on Tuesday we are more than likely to see England’s best team out as they look to secure the group win and 100% winning record.

My predictions for Tuesdays game does of course see England to see out the win and the group title winners, and for that I am planning a correct scoreline of 3 – 1 on the night. The next is an easy one, I just don’t feel right not backing Wayne Rooney to grab his fiftieth goal Tuesday night, thus beating Sir Bobby Charlton’s impressive goal scoring record. With Wayne Rooney taking so much unwarranted slack from the British media and fans at times, I just feel the England and Manchester United captain truly deserves it.
