Brighton v Derby Preview, Championship Play-off, Thursday 8th May 2014

Brighton Hove Albion were the breakers of thousands of Reading fans hearts come the end of the season after beating them to the final play off place left available. Their final two games of the season against Yeovil Town and Nottingham Forrest proved to play in their favor after winning them both, especially the game against Forrest where in the 90th minute Leonardo Ulloa made himself a hero after scoring the winner and ending the game 2 – 1 at full time. Brighton will be looking to make the most of their home advantage on Thursday night as they know Derby County are no pushovers especially as they have beating Brighton both home and away this season.

Derby County have had a terrific season and have earned 3rd place time and time again with finishing five points above Queens Park Rangers who ended up in forth. The good thing for Derby coming into this game on Thursday is that they know they can beat Brighton Hove Albion at home as well as away like tomorrow evening. But they will not want to enter this game with complacency as Brighton have clearly earned the right to finish in the play-off positions. They ended the season away from home to Leeds United where it ended one goal each but win, lose of draw it wouldn’t of effected their final table position.

Brighton Team News:

Ex Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak will be set to start this Thursday and his team mates will be relying on the experienced goalkeeper to help keep their hopes alive if they are to earn a place in the Premiership for next season. Leonardo Ulloa is the clubs top scorer having scored 14 league goals this term, with the most important one his last which was a 90th minute winner against Nottingham Forrest which earned a play-off position and a chance of promotion via Wembley.

Derby County Team News:

Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant has played in all of the Championship games this season and will of course be starting once more come Thursday when they visit Brighton for the 1st leg of the Play-0ff stages. The clubs top scorer this season is Chris Martin who has bagged himself 20 Championship goals as well as 3 goals in the Capital One Cup. The 25 year old has done extremely well since leaving Norwich City on a free transfer and if things go well the striker could once more be playing in the Premiership.

Brighton v Derby County Head to Head Statistics:

Looking at the below table we can see it is a draw with 2 wins each and the other ending in a draw. But in total we have 15 games recorded with Derby County on top with 7 wins to Brighton’s 5. There have only been 3 draws in total with 1 of these at the Amex Stadium.

18/01/14 CHA Derby County – Brighton & Hove Albion 1 : 0
10/08/13 CHA Brighton & Hove Albion – Derby County 1 : 2
12/01/13 CHA Brighton & Hove Albion – Derby County 2 : 1
06/10/12 CHA Derby County – Brighton & Hove Albion 0 : 0
20/03/12 CHA Brighton & Hove Albion – Derby County 2 : 0

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these 15 games played we have seen 32 goals scored which is giving us an average of 2.1 goals per game. But looking at the above head to head table that statistic is a little unreliable if you are planning to play the total goals per match game.

Brighton v Derby Recent Form (Left to Right)

Brighton: W D D W W

Derby: W W W W D

Derby County have the better form overall and not just in their last five games played. Although thats not to knock Brighton who have worked extremely hard to make it into the play-off positions while beating Reading to the last spot available with a 90th minute winner over Nottingham Forrest in their last game of the season.

Brighton v Derby Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Every season there is always the play offs to look forward too after the league games have all been played and we get set for a boring summer without our beloved sport. Although this year we do have the World Cup in Brazil so at least the excitement can continue after the English league play-offs have all been decided. This game on Sky Sports 1 HD looks set to bring a fantastic match with a strong side such as Derby County set to play last minute play off entries Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton stole that last play-off position from Reading with a 90th minute dramatic winner by Leonardo Ulloa which in turn ended the game against Nottingham Forrest 2 – 1. Derby County themselves have had a pretty solid season and ended in third overall and in regards to playing Brighton, Derby can take into account that they have already beaten the club twice this season which would of boosted their confidence when the draw was first drawn.

My predictions for this game I plan to put my eggs in both baskets as although Derby may of beaten Brighton twice this season I still feel a play off makes teams come alive as if it was a cup final. So my first prediction will be for Derby County to win 2 – 1 on the night which is a result seen a few times in the past. The next prediction will be for both teams to score and Brighton & Hove Albion to win which again is another I feel strongly could happen.
