Chelsea v PSG Preview, Champions League, Tuesday 8th April 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will have to live up to the name the ‘Special One’ if his side are to progress through to the semi-finals of this tournament after suffering a 3-1 defeat in the first leg over in Paris last week by PSG.

Javier Pastore’s late goal in injury time during that match last week was a huge blow for all Chelsea fans and the hosts would need to win this game by at least two clear goals on tuesday night to stand any chance of turning this quarter-final tie around and keep PSG from scoring which is going to be extremely difficult with the amount of firepower they have up front in their side.

PSG will know they pretty much have this in the bag after that impressive display last week in Paris and although I expect Chelsea to put up a bit of a fight in this game and make it difficult at times for their visitors, the overall fact is that this PSG side is just too good to let a two goal lead slip and I fully expect them to score in this game and be the ones celebrating as they progress through to the semi-finals.

Chelsea Team News:

Jose Mourinho will most likely opt to start this match with veteran striker Samuel Eto’o up front to lead the attack despite the 33 year old still not 100% fit, but he does also have Demba Ba as an option and with his side needing to score at least two goals, he might even throw caution to the wind and play both.

Ramires is unavailable due to suspension and both Marco Van Ginkel and Mikel are still lacking match fitness and look unlikely to feature.

PSG Team News:

The visitors will definitely be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic for this game as he recovers from a hamstring strain picked up in the 3-1 victory last week against Chelsea, so that will mean the responsibility of scoring the goals in this game will be on the shoulders of Cavani and after his impressive performance at the weekend in the 3-0 victory against Reims he will be in confident mood to deliver what his manager Laurent Blanc wants from him.

PSG v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

Tuesday night’s game from Stamford Bridge will become just the 5th meeting between the two clubs over the years and as we can see from the head to head statistics table below, there really is nothing between them with each club having won a game each and the remaining two games having finished all square.

08/04/14 UCL Chelsea – PSG 19 : 45
02/04/14 UCL PSG – Chelsea 3 : 1
23/07/12 CLF PSGChelsea
1 : 1
23/11/04 UCL ChelseaPSG
0 : 0
14/09/04 CLF PSG – Chelsea 0 : 3

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

9 Goals have been scored in the previous 4 matches played between the two clubs and this generates us an average goals per game statistic of 2.25.

0 Goals have been scored in the only previous match played between the two clubs at Stamford Bridge, so we are unable to provide you with an average goal per game statistic, but going on the overall figures we should expect this game to see 1 or 2 grace the back of the nets come tuesday night.

Chelsea v PSG Recent Form (Left to Right)

Chelsea: W W L L W

PSG have a commanding advantage on the recent from statistics having won all of their previous 5 matches played. Chelsea have won 3 of their last 5 games played, but they did lose the other 2 with one of those defeats coming against Crystal Palace in the Premiership.

Chelsea v PSG Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea have to win this game by at least two clear goals on tuesday night if they are to stand any real hope of being the side moving through to the semi-final stage of this tournament and with home advantage the online bookmakers seem to think they can go very close and currently have them priced up as the clear favourites to win this game at odds of 17/20 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw could be the betting market to get on here as with two of the previous four matches between the two clubs having finished all square and not many goals being expected in this game, the draw could turn out to be a clever choice and at a current best price of 14/5 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers) this does look great value.

PSG will obviously defend in large numbers and try to hit Chelsea on the counter attack, which in my opinion is not the best gameplan for the visitors, but if they can keep the game tight for at least an hour, I would then expect them to go on and win this game as Chelsea push higher and higher in search of the goals needed to qualify and for me their current best price of 7/2 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) will no doubt attract plenty of interest as it does also represent value.

Chelsea v PSG Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Jose Mourinho will need two important things go right for him and his players if they are to somehow come back from their 3-1 defeat picked up last week and progress through to the semi-finals.

The first is the tactics and in my opinion he should deploy at least two strikers to lead the attack up front and the second is that those strikers he decides to start the game with don’t waste their chances as from what I have seen from players like Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o this season is that they tend to miss a lot of chances they are presented with and in such an important game like this there really can’t be any excuses.

PSG will be without the formidable presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he nurses a hamstring pull, but they still have plenty of firepower in their attack which includes the likes of Cavani and Lavezzi and both of these players have been much better in front of goal than any of the Chelsea strikers have this season in my opinion.

The average goals per game statistics suggest that this game should only see mabye one or two goals scored on tuesday night and I think pretty much everyone is expecting a very close and hard fought game, but I really do like the odds on PSG to win this game as although they will spend most of the match defending their two goal lead, if the game is tied late on and Chelsea have not managed to secure the number of goals they need, then I can easily see PSG snatching the winner here on a well timed counter attack.

So my Banker prediction for this match is going to be Total Match Goals 2 or 3 as I am expecting something like a 1-1, 2-1 or 1-2 score line come the full time whistle and my Saver will be PSG to Win and Both Teams to Score at what I think is exceptional value from Coral.
