Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Premiership, Saturday 8th March 2014

Chelsea welcome bitter rivals Tottenham to Stamford bridge in this Saturday evening game. Chelsea currently sit top of the league with a 4 point lead over 2nd place side Liverpool. Spurs are also having a good season sitting in 5th place and only 4 points away from being in the champions league qualification spot.

Chelsea’s home form has been key to so much of their success under Jose Mourinho having not lost since way back in October to Basel in the champions league. Mourinho’s men will look to record another win at home in order to stretch the lead at the top of the premier league table.

Tottenham have struggled away from home in recent weeks losing their last 2 without scoring a single goal. Sherwood and co will look to change this as they head into the game Saturday against rivals Chelsea. Spurs striker Roberto Soldado ended his goal drout in their last outing and will look to build on his goals tally and form a long last partnership with Adebayor in the attacking line.

Jose Mourinho will always talk down his chances of winning any trophies but surely this year he must think the premier league could be his if his team carries on the way they have been playing. Chelsea have the best defensive record in the league and I can’t see Tottenham being able to break it come Saturday evening, despite the recent form of Spurs striker Adebayor.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea will be without only one absentee for the clash against Tottenham and that is Marco Van Ginkel, with this being said I expect the Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to field his strongest team for this game on saturday afternoon and really look to take the game to Spurs in front of a packed out stamford bridge and this could mean we see both Torres and Eto’o leading the attack up front for the hosts.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Tottenham could welcome back Eriksen, Kaboul and Rose to the squad who will all face late fitness tests going into saturday’s game, but both Kyle Walker and Lamela are officially ruled out with Kyle Walker nursing a hip injury and Erik Lamela still receiving treatment for a back problem.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday evening’s game from Stamford bridge will become the 132nd meeting between the two sides over the years , of which Chelsea have won 55 (30 at Stamford bridge), Tottenham have won 43 times (24 of the being at Stamford bridge) and there has been 33 draws (15 at Stamford bridge).

As we can see in the head to head statistics below, Chelsea have had much the better of it over the last 5 meetings having managed to win twice and draw three times, with Tottenham Hotspur having failed to win any.

28/09/13 PRL Tottenham Hotspur – Chelsea 1 : 1
08/05/13 PRL Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur 2 : 2
20/10/12 PRL Tottenham Hotspur – Chelsea
2 : 4
15/04/12 FAC Tottenham Hotspur – Chelsea 1 : 5
24/03/12 PRL Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur 0 : 0

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

There has been 382 goals scored in the previous 131 meetings between the two clubs over the years which provide us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.91 and with 172 of these goals having been scored at Stamford bridge in the previous 64 games played between these two clubs we are provided with an average goals per game statistic of 2.68.

Looking at both average goals per game statistic this encounter at the Stamford bridge should provide us with 2 or 3 goals.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form (Left to Right)

Chelsea: D L W D W

Tottenham Hotspur: W L L W W

Neither team has form to boast about going into this game with Chelsea having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 1 and Spurs having won 3 and lost 2 of their previous 5 matches played.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea have always enjoyed a very good record over arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur over the years and with Jose Mourinho back in charge I would expect that statistic to continue on saturday evening, so no real shock to see the online bookmakers having the hosts priced up as the clear favourites to win this game at a current best price of 8/13 with Ladbrokes (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw could be a sensible option as a cover bet here as the last two games between the two clubs have finished all square come the full time whistle and at generous odds of 3/1 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers) currently available this could be decent value.

Tottenham Hotspur are not given much hope of winning this game as their current best price of 6/1 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) suggests, but that does look a bit overpriced and it will certainly attract plenty of interest from Spurs fans who will no doubt fancy their sides chances of causing a bit of an upset in this one.

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Jose Mourinho and his players will look to get a win over rivals Tottenham and look to cement their place at the top of the league table and in front of a packed out Stamford Bridge stadium where they have an excellent record against Spurs in the past, it’s difficult to see any other outcome of this game other than a comfortable Chelsea victory.

Having said that though, this Tottenham side are not far off from breaking into a top 4 position in the league table and more importantly a champions league spot and you would expect both manager to really go for this on saturday evening.

However, looking at the previous head to head statistics for this game it does look highly unlikely that Tottenham will get anything from this game giving Chelsea’s outstanding home record this season and Chelsea to win by 2 goals does look great value here as their form has been terrific at home of late and with the Spurs defence prone to errors, the hosts should get at least a couple during this game.

For my saver bet, I will be backing total match goals of 2 or 3, as with the average goals per game statistics suggest we should be in store for around 2 or 3 goals to be gracing the back of the nets come saturday evening and although Tottenham do tend to score against Chelsea I believe Chelsea’s defensive record has drastically improved compare to previous seasons and they are worthy favourites to win this game.
