Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Premier League, Saturday 7th December 2013

Sunderland will have felt extremely unfortunate after their midweek defeat at home against Chelsea 3-4 as they did play very well indeed and certainly did not look like a side rooted to the bottom of the Premiership League table and desperate for points.

Saturday evening’s match against Tottenham Hotspur provides them with a real chance to bounce back from that defeat and if they can put in a similar performance like they did against Chelsea midweek, then they look more than capable of winning this game against a Spurs side that is lacking any real firepower up front.

Tottenham came from behind to win their midweek game 2-1 away against Fulham, Lewis Holtby grabbing the winner late on with a super strike from outside the box having came on as a second half substitute. Jermain Defoe was given the chance to impress up front, but like his fellow team mate Roberto Soldado, the goals didn’t come and it does seem that manager Villas-Boas’s side will continue their struggle to score goals up front until he makes the change every Spurs supporter wants, which is two strikers leading the attack.

Sunderland Team News:

Carlos Cuellar is the only player unavailable for the hosts as he continues to receive treatment for a hip injury. Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has returned back to the squad and resumed training having now fully recovered from injury, but looks likely to start on the bench for this game.

4-1-4-1 is the likely formation that manager Gus Poyet will use for this one which will see Jozy Altidore leading the attack up front with support in behind coming from Giaccherini, Gardner, Colback and Borini.

Striker Steven Fletcher, Midfielders Giaccherini, Gardner and Defender Phillip Bardsley are the clubs current top goalscorers this season all having scored 2 each.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Danny Rose and Cristian Eriksen are both still unavailable for the visitors as they continue recovery from ankle injuries. Dembele and Adebayor are both carrying knocks and will under take a late fitness test to see if either of them will be involved.

4-3-3 looks the likely formation that manager Villas-Boas will use for this game despite the fans wanting to see two strikers up front and with Defoe having missed his chance to impress his manager, Roberto Soldado will probably return to take his place up front with support from the flanks coming from Lamela and Lennon.

Striker Roberto Soldado is the clubs current top goalscorer this season with 4.

Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday evening’ game from The Stadium of Light will become the 100th meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Sunderland have won 35 times, Tottenham Hotspur have won 37 times with the remaining 27 games having finished all square.

The previous 5 games played between the two clubs show Tottenham Hotspur having a clear advantage having secured 3 victories with Sunderland having won just 1 and the remaining game ending in a draw.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

262 goals have been scored in the previous 99 games played between the two clubs which provides us with an average goals per game statistic of 2.64 which indicates that this game should see a couple of goals scored on Saturday evening.

Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form (Left to Right)

Sunderland: W W L D L

Tottenham Hotspur: L L W D W

Neither club has the advantage on the recent form stats, with both having managed 2 wins, 2 defeats and 1 draw from their last 5 matches played.

Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur Match Betting Odds Market

Sunderland were rather unlucky in their midweek defeat against Chelsea and will be looking to bounce back from that on Saturday evening in front of a packed out Stadium of Light, but the online bookmakers don’t rate their chances of winning this game having the hosts priced up at odds of 7/2 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers) which does look a bit on the large side considering their opponents have real problems conceding goals at the back and strikers that can’t score.

The Draw has only happened once in the previous five matches played, but with both clubs desperate for points having not been in the best of form lately, now could be a perfect time to get on the draw at generous odds of 13/5 with Sky Bet (£30 Free Bets for New Customers).

Tottenham Hotspur have the stronger squad in this game, but it does seem that the 100 million spent on players by manager Villas-Boas has been a bit of a waste and although Spurs did win their midweek game away at Fulham, this looks more difficult and their current best price of 37/40 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) to win this game is very short indeed for a side whose strikers can’t score goals.

Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Sunderland have more than a good chance of winning this game on Saturday evening in my opinion and the players will be well up for this having been beaten midweek by Chelsea. Gus Poyet’s side are desperate for points if they are to avoid being relegated next May and this match certainly represents a great opportunity to get some up against a side that have great difficulty in keeping clean sheets and scoring goals up front.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will obviously be extremely disappointed with how their club has performed so far this season and it does seem that the bundles of cash that manager Villas-Boas has spent on new players is yet to bare fruit as both Roberto Soldado and Jermain Defoe seem unable to score in a brothel at the moment in the Premiership from open play this season.

The defence is another worrying factor for Spurs fans as with Dawson and Kyle Walker making mistakes every weekend if had not of been for a world class keeper like Lloris, the number of goals conceded could of easily been double what they have been and I just can’t see anyone having much confidence in backing the visitors to win this one on Saturday evening.

The goal stats suggest we should see at least a couple of goals during this one and betting markets like Both Teams to Score YES, Total Match Goals 2 or 3 and Anytime Goalscorers could provide some decent value, but for me this game seems to have a Draw written all over it with both sides desperate for points.
