Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Preview, Premiership, Monday 7th April 2014

Tottenham’s poor performance last weekend against Liverpool was a strange one as they needed to take something away from Anfield if they were to keep their hopes of European football alive for next season.

I watched the game and noticed that Spurs lacked quality and more importantly lacked guts and determination they look very depleted as manager Tim Sherwood watched the game from the stands through choice and not because he had been banned.

Last August, they lost their best player in Gareth Bale and bought in £100m of players, are they any better? No most definitely not and the manager Tim Sherwood also don’t seem to know who their best eleven is and at this stage of the season that’s down to poor management of the club and I expect chairman Daniel Levy to sack Tim Sherwood and appoint a top manager with experience.

Sunderland need goals but in their last game, a 2-1 home defeat by West Ham, their strike-force of Connor Wickham and Fabio Borini looked more like a Championship forward line than a Premier League one and the fans will obviously be glad to see the return of Adam Johnson who has been far their best player this season.

I thought the Black Cats would kick on after the Capital One Cup final but they have actually gone backwards. They have games in hand on their relegation rivals but they do not look like winning them at the moment and their fate does look destined to be relegated come next month.

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson came off the bench to score in Monday’s defeat by West Ham so I believe if they are to come away from White Hart Lane on Monday Night with anything they need to start him.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Tottenham will be hanging on to hopes that their main man Adebayor will shake of an injury and pass a late fitness test before the game on Monday Night. Spurs only have one injury to worry about Etienne Capoue is still out with a long-term leg injury. Erik Lamela is no longer injured but I am not sure we will see him, as he won’t be match fit.

Sunderland Team News:

Adam Johnson will be back for Sunderland and he will be looking to be the first name on the team sheet as he came of the bench to score in their last game. The only injury manager Gus Poyet has to worry about is his long-term absentee kieren Westwood who has been out since last year.

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics:

Monday Night’s kick off from White Hart Lane will become the 101st meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Tottenham have won 38 times (24 at White Hart Lane), Sunderland have won 35 times (13 at White Hart Lane) and there has been 27 draws (13 at White Hart Lane).

The recent head to head statistics show that there has been one draw between the two clubs and there has been three wins for Spurs and one win for the Black Cats. The last game played at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

265 goals have been scored in the previous 100 matches played between the two clubs, which provides us with an average goal per game statistic of 2.65.

139 of those goals have been scored in the 50 matches played between the two clubs at White Hart Lane, which gives us an average goals per game statistic of 2.78.

Looking at both statistics above we should see 2 or 3 goals come Monday Night, however if Spurs main man for goals this season Adebayor doesn’t pass his late fitness test then we might not see as many goals as the statistics say.

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Tottenham Hotspur: L L D W L

Sunderland: L D L L L

Tottenham have just a slight advantage in the recent form table as they have lost 3 times, drew once and won just the once in their last five outings.

Sunderland have a really bad recent run of form as they have lost four times and drew once. They have not won a game in any of their last five matches.

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Match Betting Odds Market

Tottenham Hotspur will go into this game knowing they have to win if they are to catch Arsenal or Everton who are sat in 4th and 5th position respectively. Tim Sherwood has already been extremely disappointed with previous results and will not be a happy man if his side don’t come away with all three points come Monday Night and the best price for a Spurs Win is available at 7/4 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers).

The Draw is a big possibility in this fixture especially if Adebayor misses out because Spurs struggle for goals when ever he doesn’t feature and with Adam Johnson gaining in confidence and back in the Sunderland lineup for this game then anything can happen. The best price for Sunderland to win this game is currently available at 10/3 with Stan James (£10 Free Bets for New Customers).

Sunderland’s confidence is at a real low at the moment, as they can’t seem to find a win anywhere they play. They were unlucky last week against West ham but that was a crucial home game they lost and they can’t be doing that at this stage of the season. If I am brutally honest I cant see them winning this game and the bookmakers seem to agree as the best price is currently on offer at 6/1 with Paddy Power (£50 Free Bets for New Customers).

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Spurs need to win this game otherwise the fans will lose faith in their team as they have had to cope with a lot of disappointing result so far this campaign.

If Adebayor isn’t playing than I really feel for Spurs as another upset could be on the cards, however could this be the game that Spanish forward Soldado finally comes to life as the a lone striker as we know he can as he has proved it playing in la liga where his goal scoring record was phenomenal.

Sunderland sit in 19th place in the premier league table and with Tottenham on a bad run of form and very low on confidence then I expect Gus Poyet will be drilling it into his players to have a real go at Tottenham. Sunderland in my opinion will be going down this season unless they take at least a point from White hart lane on Monday Night.

Predictions for this match are quite difficult as both sides are in terrible form at the momen but with both clubs desperate for a win my banker this week will be both teams to score as both lineups are very weak defensively as we have seen in recent weeks.

My saver is Adebayor to score the first goal as the odds are good and he is the only real goal threat for Spurs in recent weeks and with the home crowd behind all of the Tottenham players, they do look the more likely team to score first in this game.
