Manchester United v Reading Preview, FA Cup 3rd Round, Saturday 7th January 2017.

Manchester United get to kick off the defense of this trophy Saturday lunchtime when they welcome Reading to Old Trafford. Both sides are in great form currently with United having now won seven of their last ten Premier League fixtures, while drawing the other three to Arsenal, West Ham United and Everton. Last weekend they completed six league wins on the trot and face Reading as the solid favourites.

Although this is the FA Cup it should be a routine win for Jose Mourinho and his Manchester United side, with them next to face Hull City in the league cup three days later. It will be the second of three cup games to be played in the clubs next five fixtures, with them also having to then face Hull City away from home in the second leg of the round. Premiership action continues on the 15th January when they welcome in form Liverpool to Manchester.

Reading are doing exceptionally well this season and currently sit in third place in the Championships. The league has to be one of the toughest in the world with the table hosting so many good sides that could all play in the top flight. In the clubs last five league games we have seen them with four out of the five, with the fifth a loss away from home to Leeds United back in the middle of December.

Obviously Manchester United will be the clubs hardest opponents in their next five fixtures, although Queens Park Rangers, Derby County, Cardiff City and Birmingham City will also be tough. They are currently eight points adrift the top of the league Brighton & Hove Albion with Newcastle United also six points above them. Winning all of these league games could see them catch up somewhat, but I am unsure if they can take all the points.

Manchester United Team News:

great news to see the clubs captain Wayne Rooney return from injury, and news has it the strike is also set to start after his recovery from a thigh strain. David de Gea will be rested which will allow Sergio Romero another chance to show what he can do. We will unlikely see Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin feature with their futures looking to be elsewhere.

Ibrahimovic could be rested while Eric Bailly is off to the African Nations Cup. Bastian Schweinsteiger could feature at some point as well as left back Luke Shaw.

Reading Team News:

Anssi Jaakkola and Stephen Quinn are still out of action with knee injuries while Denis Rakels also missing out with his ankle. Callum Harriott is another name on the list, with the winger having suffered a hamstring injury in the game against Fulham which was abandoned.

Manchester United v Reading United Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five games featured against each other we have seen Manchester United dominated at least four of this games, with the other ending as a draw back in 2007. In total we only have nine games recorded in which Reading have never beaten their Saturday lunchtime opponents. United have won six while also letting slip and drawing the remaining three.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the nine games we do have recorded there have been a total of twenty seven goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 3 which does seem to be a hit and miss selection when looking at the above table. I do feel going for the below selection could be a good option as both sides are scoring goals right now.

Manchester United: W W W W W

Reading: W W W L W

Although Championship side Reading are in good form currently, it is Manchester United who are the better with six straight wins on the bounce. They haven’t lost a game in the last thirteen in all competitions, with the most recent defeat seen all the way back in November away from home to Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Manchester United v Reading Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

It’s back the FA Cup action for the higher seeded Premier League sides and what better one to show live with Manchester United to host Championship Reading at Old Trafford. The game can be viewed in high definition via BT Sports 2 and kicked off at 12.30. The FA Cup holders are the bookmakers favourites to win this game, yet I cannot see it being an easy task especially as their opponents are in good form and a solid team.

United are running with some exceptional form right now, and although they have won six of their last six league games haven’t budged in the table and stay in sixth. That said they have managed to catch up the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs with them all now just a few points away. Chelsea are still ten points adrift Manchester United even though they managed to loss against Spurs on Wednesday.

Reading continue their good run of form and now sit third in the Championships and will turn up on Saturday in hopes of beating a side they have yet to achieve. Granted they have only met on nine occasions but I am sure they will be hoping to make the tenth appearance a good one under the Old Trafford sunlight. The odds on them to do so are not convincing however, with the home side the clear and solid favourites to win.

My predictions for this game are in favour of Manchester United, with them winning with relative ease on Saturday. For this I am going to take the home side to win the game and not concede, sending them through to the fourth round. My other is a mix of views, for this I am going to go for Reading to score first, and then for United to wake up and eventually win the game come the end of ninety minutes.
