Republic of Ireland v Georgia Preview, World Cup 2018, Qualifier, Thursday 6th October 2016.

Thursday night international football kicks off with the Republic of Ireland playing hosts to Georgia who recently beat Spain in a friendly back in June. Republic of Ireland had a great experience during the 2016 EURO’s in France where they were eventually knocked out by the hosts 2 – 1. Since then they have welcomed Oman to Ireland and beat them 4 – 0. The teams last fixture was a qualifier in September where they held Serbia to a 2 – 2 draw.

The sides next five qualifiers see them face Moldova and Austria away from home after Thursdays game where they will really need to start picking up points if they wish to progress to the World Cup competition in 2018. The last two of the five games will see Republic of Ireland at home against neighbours Wales and then Austria who have been a strong side in the last year.

Georgia lost their opening World Cup Qualifying games against Austria 2 – 1 and are also favourites to lose again this Thursday night against opponents Republic of Ireland. Having missed out of the European Championships in France I do feel there is little hope of this Georgia side qualifying for the World Cup or any other major competition anytime soon.

In the next five qualifying matches there is only two fixtures I can see this side winning, with both of these being Moldova home and away. They will need to play at their best however and to be fair I am thinking the games will more than likely end as a draw of some kind. Serbia face Georgia away from home in March of next year in which they are more than likely set as the favourites by the bookmakers.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

Republic of Ireland will be without Daryl Murphy who is nursing a calf injury right now. The side are also unlikely to risk James McCarthy who has been out of action since August after having groin surgery. Also missing is Keiren Westwood (thigh), Anthony Pilkington (knee) and Stephen Quinn (knee). Further issues lay with Harry Arter (groin), Aiden McGeady (hamstring) and Kevin Doyle (ankle).

Georgia Team News:

Georgia have only won once in their last eight international matches in all competitions so are being given little to no point in winning here come Thursday evening. This was however to Spain yet for some reason I can only this this as a complete fluke!

Republic of Ireland v Georgia Head to Head Statistics:

The Republic of Ireland have dominated in all seven of the games played against Georgia, having won on every occasion over the years. In total they have met four times in Ireland and the three in Georgia, and in these next two fixtures I can only imagine more misery for Georgia adding a further two loses to their tally against the Irish.

Republic of Ireland v Georgia Recent Form (Left to Right)

Republic of Ireland: D W L W L

Georgia: L W L L D

The Republic of Ireland are by far the better team here and should be in high spirits after such a successful European Championships in France this year. Although Georgia won recently against Spain, it was their first win in eight international matches so come into this game as massive underdogs.

Republic of Ireland v Georgia Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Thursday Night International football brings us the Republic of Ireland verses Georgia in their second World Cup Qualifier to date. As we have already found out the Republic of Ireland have yet to lose to Georgia and easily come in as solid favourites to win their eight game against the nation. We also know that the two sides have yet to share points or draw a game in any international friendlies.

The Republic of Ireland are in good form coming out of the EURO’s where they managed to shock the world and get through to a knock out stage fixture against the hosts France. They did lose the game 2 – 1 on the night although did manage to scare the French when Robbie Brady gave the Irish an early lead in the second minute with a well placed spot kick. However Griezmann eventually upset the underdogs with a second half brace.

Georgia failed to qualify for the EURO’s in France and will no doubt fail again to qualify for the World Cup in 2018. That said there isn’t exactly any massive nations in this Group D with the favourites likely to be Austria or Wales at a guess. Even though that has been mentioned who can Georgia realistically beat and continue to beat as they look to rise up the table and earn qualification in the two spots available.

My predictions for Thursday nights game will of course be that of backing the home side Republic of Ireland, as I certainly cannot see any chance of the away side earning a point. So for my banker bet I am going to go for Republic of Ireland to win the game to nil, even though they have conceded three times in the last four competitive matches. My next will be for a correct scoreline of 2 – 0 to the Irish.
