Southend United v Peterborough United Preview, League One, Saturday 5th September 2015

Southend United have not started the new season at all well and are still looking for their first win of the new season having drawn three and lost two of their opening five matches played. Phil Brown’s side have only scored just three goals in those five games whilst conceding six at the other end and obviously the players and fans will be desperate for a victory in this game on Saturday afternoon.

Peterborough United have not done that much better than their hosts and have also had a difficult start to their new campaign which has seen them win one, draw one and lose three of their opening five matches played.

However Dave Robertson’s side have managed to score five times during those matches which shows they do have at least some threat going forward and the main area of concern like their hosts does seem to be their defence which has conceded nine times and like their opponents their players and fans will also be desperate to return home with a victory from this one.

Southend United Team News:

Southend will be without winger Myles Weston for the live Sky Sports match against Peterborough at Roots Hall as he is on international duty with Antigua and Barbuda.

Goalkeeper Ted Smith is also away with England’s U20 squad, while defender Glen Rea will head off to join the Republic of Ireland U21s following the Sky Bet League 1 encounter.

Defender Cian Bolger is back in contention following a shoulder problem and Luke O’Neill could make his first appearance since signing for the Shrimpers on a permanent deal after his Burnley contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Peterborough United Team News:

Peterborough have been boosted by positive news on duo Kgosi Ntlhe and Michael Smith as they seek their second win of the season.

Ntlhe and Smith have been out with toe and back injuries respectively but are on the mend now, though Gabi Zakuani will miss out as he is on international duty.

Jack Baldwin (knee ligaments) remains sidelined, while Chris Forrester made his Posh debut in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Millwall and could be in contention again.

Southend United v Peterborough United Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday’s lunch time game from Roots Hall Stadium will become only the 10th meeting between the two clubs over the years, of which Southend United have won 4 with 3 of those having came with home advantage where as Peterborough have also managed 4 victories, but just 1 of those having came away from home.

As we can see from our head to head to head statistics table shown below, recent meetings between the two clubs shows Peterborough United holding a slight advantage having won three times compared to Southend United have won just twice.

14/08/12 LEC Peterborough United – Southend United 4 : 0
28/02/09 LEO Peterborough United – Southend United 1 : 2
09/08/08 LEO Southend United – Peterborough United 1 : 0
22/10/99 LET Peterborough United – Southend United 1 : 0

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

21 Goals have been scored in the previous 9 meetings between the two clubs and this provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.33.

7 of those Goals have came in the 4 previous matches played at Roots Hall Stadium and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic of 1.75.

Based on both sets of data shown above, it does seem to indicate that this game is unlikely to see many goals scored on Saturday afternoon and the Under 2.5 Goals betting market certainly seems the place to concentrate on.

Peterborough United: L L D L D

Both clubs have been in dreadful form of late with neither having managed to record a single victory in any of their previous five matches, so neither side really benefits from any recent form advantage in this one.

Southend United v Peterborough United Match Betting Odds Market

Southend United are currently the clear favourites to win this game on Saturday afternoon with a best price available of 5/4 with BetVictor – Receive £50 Free Bets For New Customers.

The Draw has not happened once in the last five matches played between the two clubs, so does look a possibility, especially if we take both clubs recent form into account  which has been extremely poor at best and the draw can be backed at a current price of 5/2 with BetFred – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets For New Customers.

Peterborough United have struggled in this fixture in recent season’s having managed just the one victory from four attempts, but with their hosts having problems scoring this could be a great opportunity to pick up their first win of the new season and for me look good value at a current best price of 5/2 with Bet365 – Receive £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers.

Southend United v Peterborough United Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Both clubs are in extremely bad form at the moment and it really is impossible to give either of these clubs a positive chance of winning this game on Saturday afternoon as a result.

However, despite all the bad form it does seem Peterborough United have the more threat up front as they have managed to score nine times from their opening five matches played, compared to just three times by their hosts and for this reason alone I am going with the visitors as my Banker Free Tip as their odds do represent value.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip will be Peterborough United’s 21 year old striker Marcus Maddison who has already notched up three goals in five starts for his club this season and against a defence that is hardly solid, he does also look good value.
