Championship Season Preview.

It wont be long now with Fridays Championship season kick off getting that little bit closer, and it comes now for us to predict who will be at the top come the end of the season. Or even those who will struggle and face the dreaded relegation. During this summers transfer window we have seen many teams attempt to strengthen, as well as others forced to let their better players leave. This could be down to the wage bill or just that these players demand to play in a better league, and you can’t blame them when the EURO Championships loom closer and hope of an international call up having a better chance whilst in a Premiership team.

So lets get down and assess who has a good chance of fighting for that prestigious climb up to the Premiership, or the wannabes who will be holding on to the hope that they can also achieve it. Last year I must admit that I seriously thought Middlesbrough had it in the bag, yet with their form taking a massive hit come the end of the season they soon dropped down and eventually lost out to Norwich City at Wembley in the play off final. Watford nearly took the title yet themselves pulled up short with a draw, eventually allowing Bournemouth the chance of lifting the Championship title. Although Watford slipped up they did manage automatic promotion alongside Bournemouth, with Norwich City joining them via the play off positions.

Incredibly we see Wigan Athletic relegation last season, after only winning the FA Cup and being in the Premiership a few seasons ago. Blackpool also found the drop with them finishing bottom of the table, and alongside them joining the three was Millwall who will also find the relegation hard to take. A fair few teams struggled last season, more notable of the few were Bolton Wanderers, Fulham and Reading. All teams who really should be fighting for promotion back to the Premier League.

Promotion Predictions:

Some strong teams in the Championship this season yet I only feel two of these teams are actually strong enough to win it. I personally feel it is for Middlesbrough and Derby County to take with last years relegated side Hull City being very close come the end. Queens Park Rangers I doubt will be up there for the automatic slots, although they could potentially see themselves in a play-off position.

Brentford did well last season although did falter in the play-offs losing out to a much better side, yet could they try it again this season who knows. Burnley I’m also considering with an outside chance, but much like Queens Park Rangers I just think they will slip up and have to settle for a play-off fight.

Relegation Predictions:

Bristol City, MK Dons and Preston North End all did extremely well last season in League One, yet can they continue the good form and survive a season in one of the toughest leagues in the world. I believe they will all survive this season and will actually go for Bolton Wanderers to struggle and eventually face relegation to League One. Joining them I am going for Rotherham United who only just avoided the drop, as well as Fulham who I feel just don’t have what it takes currently to stay in the Championships.

Promotions & Relegated Last Season:

The Championship League last season has to be one of the most exciting I have seen in some years, with so many teams potentially winning the title it came down to the final few games that determined who would come out on top. Wolves and Derby County only just missed out on a play-off position, and with the run of form they were in it’s a shame as we could of seen even more excitement seeing a side like Wolves return back to the top leagues.

Two of the relegation sides last season were once plying their trade in the Premiership only a handful of seasons ago. Blackpool were relegated from the top flight back during the 2010/11 season yet did do well but missed out on the play-offs the following year. So to see them now relegated to League One does come as a surprise. Wigan Athletic were relegated in the 2012/13 season but did amazingly win the FA Cup final against Manchester City. Look at them now having to play football in League One. Millwall are another I didn’t see going down, yet it’s been many years since that name played as notable as its reputation.

Championship Top Scorers 2014/15 Season.

Last seasons Championship top scorer was Ipswich Towns Daryl Murphy hitting the net on twenty seven occasions. It is also good to see the 31 year old will continue doing so for Ipswich, unless of course he moves on during this transfer window. Troy Deeney of Watford was joint second with Jordan Rhodes of Blackburn Rovers. Yet the striker will now be attempting to show his talents in the Premier League after him and his club were promoted last season. Jordan Rhodes has been linked with a move although nothing so far has materialized from the rumours.

Championship Win/Lose Statistics 2014/15.

Bournemouth: WINS:26 – – LOSES:8

Watford: WINS:27 – – LOSES:11

There were a few teams who enjoyed some good form last season, yet the tables top two both stood out on top as expected. Close behind were Norwich City and Middlesbrough as well as Brentford then Ipswich Town which just shows how close the top really was. The worst was of course Blackpool who only managed four wins all season, while also achieving an incredible twenty eight loses.

Bookmakers Predicted Promotion Hopefuls for 2015/16.

Middlesbrough just missed out last season with them losing to Norwich City in the play-off final at Wembley. The bookmakers have set them as solid favourites to earn promotion by any means, and also have them at joint favourites to actually win the league come the end of the season Best odds seen here  @ 19/10 for Promotion with Ladbrokes – £25 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

Derby County have a solid chance of promotion this year with last years finishing form sadly seeing their downfall and missing the play-offs. They are currently joint favourites for outright winning the Championship so could be a good solid choice for promotion. The best odds found can be seen here @ 15/8 for Promotion with BetVictor – £50 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

Hull City are seen by the bookmakers as a good choice to go straight back up into the Premiership after facing relegation last season. They are also the bookmakers third favourites to win the title and currently showing some good odds to do so. The best odds on the actually being promoted however can be seen here @ 10/3 for Promotion with Bet365 – Receive £200 Matched Bets when You Register a New Account

Championship Promotion and Relegation Predictions, as well as possible top scorers.

My predictions for next years Championship competition isn’t too far off of what the bookmakers are predicting. Although I do feel Queens Park Rangers may still have something to offer, even though they are looking likely to sell or loan out a good portion of their top stars. If Charlie Austin leaves for Newcastle or West Ham United we could see them struggle for a good striker to bang in the goals. As for Hull City, I do see them bouncing straight back up as Steve Bruce isn’t the type of manager to sit back and look to take it easy in the lower league. He will be looking at getting his newly formed side straight back up, and with this year seeing his side continue to gel we could see them cleaning up. Remember that the ex Manchester United defender bought so many new players last summer they could still be looking to cement the team cohesion needed for any successful club.

Middlesbrough are a given I think, as they looked so strong in the Championship as well as the FA Cup. They managed to get to the 5th round of the competition before being knocked out 2 – 0 by Arsenal who did also go on to win by beating Aston Villa 4 – 0 in the final. Anyway with that said I do see Middlesbrough actually coming top and earning that automatic promotion. There is one team I was hoping to make it last season, and that is Wolverhampton Wanderers. They are a team who have been up and down so many leagues over the last decade, and I for one would love to see them fight for promotion into the Premiership this season. So I for one am putting them as my promotion wild card!
