Argentina v Belgium Preview, World Cup, Quarter Final, Saturday 5th July 2014

Argentina head into this game after a tough game against the Swiss in the last 16 which they scraped through when Angel Di Maria scored in the last minute of extra time to shatter Swiss hearts and send the Argentines through, despite having a poor game and completing 4 crosses from 19 and having the lowest pass accuracy on his side of just 66%.

Both teams had chances but Argentina deserved the win. Argentina showed in this game and generally throughout the tournament that even when they’re not playing well they have the quality required to do the job.

Belgium also had an exciting game against USA in their last 16 clash. The game finished 2-1 AET with normal time ending 0-0 and Belgium would have felt as if Tim Howard had a brick wall behind him after the performance he put in.

Belgium were sluggish in their group stage and would have been out if they were in a tougher group but here they are and they have a chance in this competition if the likes of Eden Hazard can hit top form.

Argentina Team News:

Argentina still hold a question mark over the fitness of Sergio Aguero, they’re unsure whether he will be able to take part in any further games if Argentina get that far but will be a massive blow if he is unable to play. Star man Lionel Messi will lead the line.

Belgium Team News:

Belgium have Defour returning to the squad after his suspension causing him to miss the game against the Americans. Thomas Vermaelan and Vanden Borre are carrying injury problems.

I expect Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen to maintain his place in left back after scoring the winning goal in their previous game Romelu Lukaku will give coach Wilmots a selection problem up front as Lukaku has started on the bench in the last two games.

Argentina v Belgium Head to Head Statistics:

These two nations have only played each other twice and both of these games were over 20 years ago therefore we can’t use these results to predict this game. Both teams won a game each which makes it even harder to call although some would say that Belgium have looked the more effective side in this tournament so far.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the two games there were just three goals scored which leaves us with an average of 1.50 goals per game. I think we can expect to see 2 or 3 goals in this game as both sets of squads have world class players that can muster up a goal or two.

Argentina v Belgium Recent Form (Left to Right)

Argentina: W W W W W

Belgium: W W W W W

Both nations have flawless recent form which will have to come to an end for one of these teams. Neither side have played particularly well so far in the competition but if both are 100% I think Belgium will just edge it as they have the better squad.

Argentina v Belgium Match Betting Odds Market

Argentina are slight favourites for this one and I can only think of two reasons why. The first of which being that they are accustom to the weather being a South American team themselves and the second being they have the world’s best player which always gives them a chance of winning.

If Messi is on top form and Aguero is cleared to play, I think Argentina will clinch the win with those two on the score sheet and the current best price for Argentina to win this game is available at 6/5 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers).

The Draw doesn’t look impossible with both of these teams drawing 0-0 in normal time and needing extra time to get them through to this stage in the competition in their last 16 games. If neither side are playing well then I can imagine this one ending 0-0 and the current best odds available are at 9/4 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers).

Belgium were labelled as the dark horses of the competition and rightly so as their squad is filled with superstars. The media have seemingly affected the performance of Belgium by adding pressure to their game as they aren’t playing with freedom and taking risks that you’d expect to see from the likes of Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne. If they play with no fear I think they will win this game and you can obtain a current best price of 14/5 with Coral (Deposit £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers).

Argentina v Belgium Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

I think both teams will score in this game, I expect to see Messi and Lukaku on the score sheet for their respective teams. Argentina will feel the pressure if Brazil are through to the semi-final (which they will know prior to their game) and it may cause them to force the ball and try to make a statement.

Belgium are very good on the counter and have Captain Vincent Kompany to organise the team and get behind the ball which will leave little or no space for the Argentine attack. If the game does end 0-0 in normal time then I think that it will go all the way to penalties where Belgium will be triumphant as I can see Chelsea’s Thiabaut Courtois being the hero in the shootout.

Despite this my predictions are going to reflect the fact that I expect both teams to play their best game yet respectively and my Banker is Both Teams to Score & Belgium to Win, I have chosen this because I feel that Argentina are very sloppy in defence and Belgium are at their best on the counter attack. I also can’t imagine Argentina not having an input on the game.

My Saver is also going to reflect the fact I believe Belgium will win and both sides will score. I am going for a correct score of 2-1 to Belgium.
