Liverpool v Villarreal Preview, Europa League, Semi-Finals 2nd Leg, Thursday 5th May 2016

Liverpool head into this 2nd leg match having lost last week over in Spain 1-0 courtesy of a late injury time winner by Villarreal’s Adrian Lopez and with Liverpool having been comfortably beaten over the weekend by struggling Swansea City 3-1, the players must be completely drained of any confidence for this match.

Excuses were made by manager Jurgen Klopp that the defeat was mainly down to him having rested a number of first team players and although he might have a point, there were still plenty of first team players involved who showed very little and I think the hosts will find this a very difficult game on Thursday night.

Villarreal won their match over the weekend 2-0 away against Valencia, that result moved them into a clear 4th place position in the Primera la liga table and the visitors will be brimming with confidence as they prepare for this important 2nd leg tie.

Villarreal never really came under that much pressure in their first leg victory and it will be interesting to see how they decide to play in this match, as if they do try to sit deep and defend their lead, I can see them being punished, however if they throw a bit of caution to the wind and try to score the first goal of the game, then it should be curtains for Liverpool.

Liverpool Team News:

The hosts do have a number of casualties for this game with Henderson, Origi, Gomez and Danny Ings all still out receiving treatment for respective injury related problems. Sakho is facing upto an 18 month ban having failed a recent drug test so he won’t be pulling on a red shirt anytime soon and if Daniel Sturridge is not selected in the starting lineup he will no doubt be handing in a transfer request at the end of this season.

Villarreal Team News:

The hosts have a full squad available to them with no fresh injury problems from their exploits over the weekend where ten first team players were rested, yet Villarreal still managed to go on and win their match away against Valencia 2-0.

Liverpool v Villarreal Head to Head Statistics:

This game on Thursday night will become only the 3rd ever meeting between the two clubs. The first match came back in 2008 in a friendly at the El Madrigal Stadium which finished 0-0 and was followed last week by that 1-0 victory again at the El Madrigal Stadium by hosts Villarreal.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

Just the 1 Goal has been scored in the previous two matches played between the two clubs and this provides us with an average goals per game statistic of exactly 0.5.

Those stats suggest this game to see very little in the way of goals scored and as such Under 2.5 Goals looks the stand out wager here on the goals market.

Liverpool v Villarreal Recent Form All Competitions (Left to Right)

Liverpool: W W D L L

Villarreal: L L D W W

Nothing between the two clubs on the recent form statisics with both having won two, drawn one and lost two of their previous five matches played and this seems to suggest that this game on Thursday night could finish all square.

Liverpool v Villarreal Match Betting Odds Market

Liverpool are the clear odds on favourites to win this game at a current best price available of 3/4 with BetVictor – Receive £25 Free Bets when Registering a New Account and although they do have the all important home advantage, their odds do look a bit on the short side for me and not really great value if im honest.

The Draw is an obvious outcome as with the first leg having been such a close affair, I can certainly see this one following suit and a draw would be a sensible cover option here at good odds of 14/5 with Betfred – Bet £10 Get £30 Free when Registering a New Account.

Villarreal have that vital one goal lead from the first leg and if they were to decide to try and score the first goal of this game, then I could see them going on to win this second leg tie and for me their current best odds of 9/2 with SkyBet – Bet £5 & Receive £20 in Free Bets when Registering a New Account, do look a bit overpriced considering how strong their squad is.

Liverpool v Villarreal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Liverpool will need to play much better than that did in the 1st leg match over in Spain to have any chance of progressing through to the finals and with their only way back into European football next season being by winning this tournament, everything is definitely on the line for the hosts.

However, they did show tremendous character to comeback and beat a strong looking Borussia Dortmund team in their quarter final 2nd leg at Anfield and another performance like that would certainly see them going through in my opinion, but with a poor result over the weekend I’m just not sure the players will have the confidence to produce another display like that.

Villarreal will definitely not be suffering from any confidence issues as with having won the first leg 1-0 and having won their game over the weekend away against Valencia, the whole squad will be up for this match and if they manage to score early on, I think this tie will be beyond Liverpool’s reach.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker Free Tip for this game is going to be for Both Teams to Score as I do see Villarreal getting at least one and I also believe that Liverpool will get one as well, so this looks to be the most sensible option for our main wager on the game.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip will be for Villarreal’s top goalscorer and striker Cedric Bakambu as although he was unable to get his name on the score-sheet in the first leg, he looks good value to be on as the visitors goalscorer in this game.
