Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Preview, Championship, Saturday 5th April 2014

With only seven games left to play it is important for Wigan Athletic to continue fighting for positive results if they wish to be in contention for a promotion back into the Premiership. There is only six points between them and both Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town who will be going out of their way to fight for those few reachable play off positions on offer. Wigan Athletic’s next three Championship games are all at home with two of them rather easy ones. If they secure a minimum of six points from these three games it could leave them in a much better position to stay in the play offs.

Leeds United are really suffering with form right now and in the last ten games have only managed to win one which was against relegation battling side Millwall. Although they should be safe from the drop with being twelve points clear of Barnsley they will still need to secure a few points here or there to ease that worry. That could be possible with their only tougher game being at home to Nottingham Forest and Derby County. That said they have managed to lose their last two home games against much lower sides in the division with the worst coming at the hands of Charlton Athletic.

Wigan Athletic Team News:

Wigan Athletic will be without Chilean midfielder Jean Beausejour who is currently serving a suspension due to the yellow card limits put in place. The clubs top scorer is still on loan midfielder Nick Powell who has so far scored seven goals in twenty seven games this season, and will no doubt be pleasing new manager David Moyes as the youngster hopes to earn a place in the Manchester United first team next season.

Leeds United Team News:

Leeds top scorer is still the incredible Ross McCormack who has so far notched twenty eight goals in all competitions, and although the Scottish striker has scored so many goals he still finds his team on the losing end most weeks. Twenty four year old Matt Smith is the closest behind McCormack and has so far scored ten league goals this season.

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Head to Head Statistics:

We only have 5 recorded games that these two have faced each other and as you can see below it is Wigan Athletic who have had the better turnout. With 3 wins, a draw and a loss we can see that four of these results came around ten years ago. The more recent game did see Leeds United win at home this season but with their current form I cannot see them making it a double over Wigan.

04/12/13 CHA Leeds United – Wigan Athletic 2 : 0
16/01/06 FAC Leeds United – Wigan Athletic 3 : 3P
06/01/06 FAC Wigan Athletic – Leeds United 1 : 1
18/02/05 CHA Wigan Athletic – Leeds United 3 : 0
30/10/04 CHA Leeds United – Wigan Athletic 0 : 2

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

With only 5 games played against each other we have a good total of 15 goals scored, which is giving us an average of 3 goals per game. that’s pretty decent so we can only hope that Saturday lunchtimes game has more of the same on offer when they kick off.

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Recent Form (Left to Right)

Wigan Athletic: D D L W D Leeds United: L L L W L Things just seem to be going from bad to even worse for Leeds United who have now lost four of their last five league games. Wigan Athletic however have done reasonably well and even earned a well fought draw against Championship leaders Leicester City last weekend.

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Match Betting Odds Market

Wigan Athletic are solid favourites for the win on Saturday and you can see why with looking at their opponents current form. The bookmakers odds are not great but you can still find the best available here @ 4/7 with Coral – Receive £50 Free Bets when Registering a New Account.

The Draw would be a good result for Leeds United although a poor one for their hosts as they look to cement their place in the Championship play-offs. The bookmakers best current odds can be seen here @ 3/1 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers).

Leeds United will be seen as huge underdogs for this game even though they did manage to beat Wigan on their own turf last year. Yet the bookmakers feel a win for Leeds United here is very unlikely and have set the odds high with the best found here @ 6/1 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

The English Championships have been proven to be one of the toughest leagues around with so many quality sides all worthy of a place in the English top flight. Yet on Saturday we see last years FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic look set to attempt their immediate return to the Premiership after dropping down last year.

Leeds United will be hoping to break their run of bad form but I can’t see that likely against this Wigan side who forced Leicester City to a draw last weekend. A win for Wigan Athletic will see them temporary put a further three points between them and Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town as both look set to fight for those few realistic available play off spots.

My predictions for Saturday lunchtimes game does in fact see Wigan Athletic win with the first being both teams to score and Wigan Athletic to win the game. Granted Leeds United haven’t scored too many in recent weeks but we do see Ross McCormack scoring on regular occasions having scored four goals in each of the last league games they have played. The other is for Ross McCormack to score anytime during the match, which does seem to be the normal for the Scottish International.
