Republic of Ireland v Serbia Preview, International, Wednesday 5th March 2014

So far so good for new manager Martin O’Neill since taking over in November of last year and what a way to start with Robbie Keane, McGeady and Shane Long firing Republic of Ireland to a 3 – 0 victory for his first game in charge. The appointment of O’Neill has excited many of the Irish players and not more so than Shay Given who was unexpectedly frozen out under the previous man in charge. Since that victory Republic of Ireland have since played respectable side Poland in which the game ended goalless.

Serbia are currently a side to be feared right now having not lost in their last five internationals and with drawing against Croatia and Russia it is starting to sow this side do have a lot to offer. Also within these last five results Serbia have beaten Wales away from home in a 3 – 0 romp as well as beat Japan is a friendly as well as completely thrash Macedonia 5 – 1 in the World Cup Qualifiers. Sadly these results came too last as they failed to qualify for Brazil in May.

Republic of Ireland Team News:

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has recently said he has lost three key player for their challenging friendly battle against Serbia. Sadly Andy Reid, Kevin Doyle and Rob Elliot have all recently withdrawn due to injuries. Reid’s would be the worst as he recently underwent surgery on his hernia. Doyle is out with a thigh injury and Newcastle goalkeeper Elliot missing out due to a knee issue.

Serbia Team News:

Although Serbia have failed to qualify for that plane to Brazil this Summer they will still be looking to continue their impressive form with a win over the Republic of Ireland who are under new management. With Manchester City defender Aleksandar Kolarov on target against Macedonia we will no doubt see the star start again when facing the Irish on Wednesday.

Republic of Ireland v Serbia Head to Head Statistics:

With only two head to head matches to go on you can see below that neither of the teams have the advantage of superiority. Although with the recent form of both nations being taken into account you can’t help but feel Serbia will have the upper hand here Wednesday night.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

With only 2 head to heads to take statistics from we see both have ended as draws. With just 2 goals scored over these 2 previous international friendlies it of course only gives us an average of 2 goals per game. Lets just hope we see more than a boring goalless draw come Wednesday evening.

Republic of Ireland v Serbia Recent Form (Left to Right)

Republic of Ireland: D W W L L

Serbia: D W W W D

In their last five internationals we see the away side Serbia who are the team in form coming into this clash. With wins over Wales, Japan and Macedonia last year they also earned two fantastic draws against Croatia and Russia and no doubts makes them favourites for this friendly.

Republic of Ireland v Serbia Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This match is going to be Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s toughest test so far even though they have had two previous good results since taking over in November. But they are coming up against a Serbian side who have recently brushed aside Japan, Wales and Macedonia with ease as well as earning some respectable draws against Russia and Croatia.

Republic of Ireland are without some important players for this match with Kevin Doyle among those missing due to a thigh strain. The striker made a move to QPR in January on loan and has so far impressed Harry Redknapp having scored twice in five appearances.

So lets get to the information that counts, we have seen these two sides meet twice in the past with only two goals being scored. Both games ended as boring draws and the question is will that happen again Wednesday evening? Me personally I do not believe it will, with Serbia playing in great form I do feel they could steal the result on the night with both sides scoring also. The other I am going for is 2 – 3 goals exactly on the night which could prove to come in considering both sides are playing well right now.
