Stoke City v Liverpool Preview

Stoke City last won the league cup back in the 1971-72 season when beating Chelsea 2-1 in the final that took place at the old Wembley Stadium and this has been the clubs only success in this tournament.

Fans will be hoping that their team has the players to make it all the way to the final this year and with the club having performed reasonably well in the league so far this season, the hosts are certainly in with a big chance of making those dreams happen if they can win this game on Tuesday night.

Liverpool are no stranger to league cup final wins as they have won the cup on eight different occasions, the last time coming back in the 2011-12 season when beating Cardiff City 3-2 on penalties after the teams battled out a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Liverpool are not doing at all well this season in the league and their 2-0 defeat over the weekend away against West Ham United does show that the club needs to bring in at least a few more players during the January transfer window if they are to have any chance of securing a place in Europe next season, let alone win this competition.

Stoke City Team News:

The hosts have almost a full squad available for this game but will continue to be without the services of Peter Crouch who is still a week or two away from returing back to the squad. Stephen Ireland is making good progress from his recent injury and will undertake a late fitness test to see if he can play any part of this match on Tuesday night.

Liverpool Team News:

The visitors have a lengthy injury list at the moment and will be missing the services of Skrtel, Gomez, Flanagan, Milner, Rossiter, Ings and Origi for this game. There are also major doubts over both Henderson and Sturridge and both will undertake a late fitness test on Monday to see if either of them can participate.

Stoke City v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

Stoke City v Liverpool Recent Form (Left to Right)

Stoke City: D L W W L

Liverpool: D L W W L

Neither side has been in the best of form lately, but there really is nothing to seperate them based on their recent form statistics as both have managed two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five matches played and this seems to indicate that this game could finish up all square come Tuesday night.

Stoke City v Liverpool Match Betting Odds Market

Stoke City are currently a best price of 21/10 with Bet365 – Receive £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers Registering an Account, to win this game on Tuesday night and some people will definitely see this as value with them having the all important home advantage.

The Draw also looks good value at a current best price of 23/10 with BetVictor – Receive £50 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account, as there really is not much between the two sides on their recent form statistics and with this game being a two legged affair neither side will be wanting to head into the second leg with a defeat.

Liverpool are a current best price of 8/5 with BetFred – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets for New Customers Registering an Account, but this does look a bit short considering the amount of injuries they have to their squad and still missing Daniel Sturridge from their attacking line.

Stoke City v Liverpool Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

A tough match that has the potential of going either way on Tuesday night as with both sides having struggled of late, there is a very strong possibility that this one could end up all square and looking at the recent head to head statistics, it does seem to indicate that a draw between these two sides is well overdue.

Stoke City do have the all important home advantage and have proved a very tough side to beat when playing in front of their home fans and with players like Bojan, Arnautovic and Shaqiri they do have a very real threat going forward.

Liverpool are still without Daniel Sturridge up front and with Origi also now on the casualty list their attacking options are limited at best with Benteke looking once again to lead the line up front on his own again for this match.

The last meeting between the two sides came back at the start of the premiership season on the 9th August last year, Liverpool came away as 1-0 winners from that game courtesy of an 86th mininute winner from Philippe Coutinho.

Onto some predictions then and based on all the facts and statistics mentioned above in this preview my Banker Free Tip will be for the game to finish all square, mainly down to the head to head statistics indicating that a draw between these two sides is very much overdue and with this tie being a two legged affair, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Liverpool defend deep in large numbers in an attempt to take a draw back to Anfield for the second leg where they might have a few of their key players available.

My First Goalscorer Free Tip will be for Stoke City’s attacking midfielder Arnautovic to score the first goal of the game as I have been quite impressed with his finishing this season and with the Liverpool defence having shipped two goals in their last game away to West Ham United, I do expect the hosts to score at least one during this match.
