Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao Preview, Primera La Liga, Sunday 5th January 2014

Real Sociedad enjoyed a good week after the away win to Granada sent the club into 5th position. After a poor start to the season the club have clawed its way back into their current impressive position. With the top three clubs, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid running away with the division it is left to these two clubs to fight it out for 4th position and a Champions League spot for next year. We do however see Bilbao four points in front of Sociedad and they will see this game as a huge opportunity to make up some of the difference with being at home.

Athletic Bilbao continue to battle it out in hope of catching their closest targets Real Madrid who are an incredible eight points clear currently. In front of them we see Barcelona five points clear and top club Atletico Madrid who are one game in front with being sixteen points in front. So I would think their main priority would be to maintain form and continue to hold 4th place and entry into the most prestigious competition the Champions League. The away draw to Sevilla in mid December hasn’t helped as it was a game they really should of won to keep up the pressure.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao Team News

Real Sociedad Team News:

Real Sociedad have been without De La Bella since early December after he picked up an ankle injury in the away draw to Algeciras. The defender has featured in eleven games so far this season and scored one goal. We also see Estrada out since September with the same injury while both Granero and Ifran are missing with crucial knee ligament damage.

Athletic Bilbao Team News:

Athletic Bilbao’s injury worries are not as severe, although they are missing two defenders with the more important being French star Aymeric Laporte who has featured sixteen times this season and scored an important goal for the club. Fellow defender Albizua is also missing due to a calf strain although the Spaniard has only featured in two games this season.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao Head to Head Statistics

Last season Real Sociedad were winners with grabbing victories both home and away and then we see Bilbao experiencing the same the season before. Yet if we look at the 34 games played in total we can see Athletic Bilbao have the very slight edge having won 1 more than their opponents. We have seen 13 draws between these two sides with 6 of them with Athletic Bilbao away from home.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao Recent Form (Left to Right)

Real Sociedad: W W W L D

Athletic Bilbao: W W D L W

Both clubs are in fine form right now and sit 4th and 5th in the Primera Division. Bilbao themselves have not moved much in regards to table positions with them occupying 4th position for quite some time and it is always hard to gain points against the leading three top clubs.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Its an exciting match for your viewing on Sunday if you follow the Spanish leagues, with both 4th and 5th place battling it out for that last available Champions League spot. With Atletico Madrid and Barcelona leading the way Bilbao’s closest target is the famous and powerful Real Madrid who are currently 8 points in front. With a total of 16 points between Bilbao and Atletico Madrid you can only guess both these sides would be best hoping for that 4th position finish.

Last season see Real Sociedad qualify for the Champions League although they were very poor this year and finished bottom of their group with a swift exit. I can only imagine the club would like to rectify that experience for next year and give it a better shot, but to do that they much win Sundays important game and close those 4 points between the two sides.

With that it brings me to my predictions. Now I can honestly see Real Sociedad pulling one over their opponents on Sunday but I also feel Athletic Bilbao will not give up without a fight. Thus in the past we have seen so many draws between these two sides. Bilbao have drawn 6 times at Real Sociedad’s ground which is just under half of the results, so it could prove to be a good bet for them to grab a well earned point here. So my first will be for both teams to score and for the game to end as a draw. With the other being a WIN for Real Sociedad and for Carlos Vela to score.
