Manchester United v Swansea City Preview, FA Cup, Sunday 5th January 2014

The English Premiership Champions have looked far from their best since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down and nominated fellow Scot David Moyes his successor. Having lost four times at what was once a fortress we now have teams no longer scared to visit the famous Old Trafford stadium. David Moyes side face a tough test on Sunday will a lot of expectations on them to bounce back from the midweek loss to Tottenham Hotspurs. Moyes is very excited about the FA Cup and leading a club like United to silverware so fans can only hope the current set of players start believing in themselves once more and be the champions they were last year.

Swansea City head to Old Trafford having not won a game in seven games and now see themselves having to think about Premiership survival if this form continues. With the Welsh side conceding far too many soft goals they can only hope their defense is in top shape come Sunday. It will be peaceful to know however that United will be without the inform Wayne Rooney and Dutchman Robin van Persie who are both recovering from injuries. Swansea City would of won the game midweek to the other Manchester Club if they had defended better and skipper Ashley Williams has complained of such defensive errors in recent articles.

Manchester United Team News:

The main worry for Manchester United is in form Wayne Rooney’s supposed injury caused by rushing him back into the lineup. Reports say that the England striker will miss this weekends game but could likely be ready for their next opponents next week. We also still see Robin van Persie out of action with recovering from a thigh injury as well as recent loss Ashley Young who suffered a shoulder injury to Tottenham’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Phil Jones (knee), right back Rafael (groin) and Nani (hamstring) are all still missing from the lineup.

Swansea City Team News:

Swansea City are without Pablo Hernandez who picked up a hamstring injury during midweeks game against Manchester City, and manager Michael Laudrup’s continued injury worries will soon take its toll as he will need to start looking into the January transfer market or the teams youth system for backup. They are still without Michu, Michel Vorm and Nathan Dyer and will likely be missing Leon Britton for the game after picking up an illness this week.

Manchester United v Swansea City Head to Head Statistics:

Since Swansea City have arrived in the Premiership back in 2011 we have seen Manchester United nearly complete a 100% record. Although in the past we have recorded 9 games played seeing United win 7 to Swansea City’s 1 and the remaining game a draw. So even over time we have seen Manchester United dominate the Welsh side.

In the 9 games played we have seen a total of 19 goals scored which isn’t too impressive, yet last years result was the better one where United beat Swansea 4 – 1 at The Liberty Stadium. So we have an average of 2.1 goals per game which would be a good bet for this game seeing as the Champions are not firing on all cylinders.

Swansea City: L D L L D

When comparing the two we can obviously see it is Manchester United in the far better form when looking at the above form chart, but lets be honest here we have a United side who are playing far from their best and having lost four times already at Old Trafford fans and neutrals alike come to expect a lot more of the current English Champions.

Manchester United v Swansea City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Right now you just never know who is going to win at Old Trafford and with Swansea City giving Manchester City a run for their money midweek you could see that giving the Welsh side some hope and confidence. Although Swansea City’s main faults were at the back and leaked three easy goals much to the annoyance of their manager and captain Ashley Williams.

Manchester United before they game against Tottenham were starting to put together a run of good results having won six games on the trot after the two defeats at home to Everton and Newcastle United. Having already lost four times at home this season it is a stat they champions will quickly need to fix as teams no longer fear coming to the famous ground. Both defenses this year are leaking far too many goals, something which is quite alien to the side David Moyes inherited at the start of the season. The January transfer window is now upon us and we see Manchester United linked with nearly every world class midfielder and left back in the world, thanks to the English media no doubt. Fans and neutrals alike still have no idea if Moyes will bring any world class talent into the side although there has been hints.

As for predictions for this game, we need to be realistic and favor the English Champions for this game. Yeah okay they lost again at Old Trafford but if you watched the game they didn’t get a penalty which caused Ashley Young’s shoulder injury by Spurs goalkeeper Lloris’s extremely high foot. So I am going for a Manchester United win and both teams to score after seeing Swansea score twice against the blue side of Manchester. The other is for Danny Welbeck to score a brace if he plays, which is likely as Moyes is missing his first choices in Rooney and van Persie.
