Blackburn v Manchester City Preview, FA Cup, Saturday 4th January 2014

Blackburn Rovers have been in much better form in recent weeks with picking up eleven points out of a maximum eighteen in the last six matches, and even managed a draw away from home to Queens Park Rangers who at the time sat top of the Championship.

The only loss they have suffered is last week at home to Birmingham City who won the game 3 goals to 2. After going three goals down Rovers dug deep and pulled back two with a Rhodes brace and in injury time tested Birmingham’s resolve with almost a perfect comeback but sadly Dann’s header rebounded off the post and soon after the referee ending the game with the final whistle.

Blackburn Rovers d head into this game full of confidence and with being at home can only help, yet they are playing against a side who are in incredible form having not lost in 12 games.

From strength to strength we see Pellegrini’s men continue on an impressive 12 games unbeaten run, not only that but 11 of those results ended with some impressive wins including the demolition of Arsenal 6 – 3 and also the 2 – 1 win over other title hopefuls Liverpool.

We have mentioned before that Manchester City are the only team this season to beat Bayern Munich who themselves went on an unbelievable 27 game unbeaten run. This run of form even has Manchester City’s next Champions League opponents Barcelona worried as club favourite Iniesta stating that Barcelona must play at the absolute best to have a chance of beating a side such as Man City.

Blackburn Team News:

Blackburn Rovers are looking to offload some players during the January transfer window with the main aim to bring down their wage bill. With Rovers struggling with the new Financial Fair Play rules soon to be in effect at the end of the season manager Shaw has had to make the most of January with signing Hull’s Tom Cairney and Cardiff’s Rudy Gestede on permanent deals. Once the rules do come in Blackburn will likely face a fine or transfer ban as punishment.

They did however manage to offload the clubs top earners during the summer yet still need to improve on their wage bill if they are to avoid such punishments.

Manchester City Team News:

With the January transfer window now open news circling is of England defender Joleon Lescott’s potential move away from the Etihad Stadium, with Turkish side Besiktas openly stating their interest. We still have the usual suspects missing from this Manchester City side, with top scorer Sergio Aguero being the more important still out with a calf strain and will unlikely feature until early February.

Blackburn v Manchester City Head to Head Statistics:

With the last few years results favoring Manchester City due to their new rich owners you can see them easily dominate Blackburn Rovers both home and away. Yet if we look at the 97 games these two have played against each other it is in fact Blackburn who win the head to head challenge with 38 wins to Manchester City’s 34. The two sides have also drawn 25 times with 9 of them at Ewood Park which again shows Blackburn to be the more prominent side.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 97 games played between these two historic clubs we have seen a total of 293 goals scored which gives us an impressive goals per game average of 3. Also with Manchester City now being the team they are and also Blackburn sitting mid table one division below we could potentially see a lot of goals scored Saturday lunchtime.

In the last few weeks games we have seen Blackburn Rovers in much better form, they did however lose to Birmingham City at home in a 3 – 2 thriller but they did manage to bounce back 3 days later with a win over Leeds United. Manchester City however head into this match on the back of 12 games unbeaten with 11 of them being convincing wins.

Blackburn v Manchester City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

With Blackburn Rovers being in better form now than a few weeks ago we could see a slightly more exciting match as the Championship club will have a lot more confidence with also being at home. But then they are facing a side currently second in the Premiership and also the destroyers of any big team they have come to face so far this season.

Even with the above mentioned Blackburn will have to be on top form and embrace the FA Cup fever if they are to hope for any progression in this famous competition as Manchester City themselves will be looking to reach the final once more and not through it away much like last year to relegated side Wigan.

So coming into this match with some predictions, for me personally I can see Manchester City fielding a good side as they will look to take this competition seriously in hope of some silverware this season. After losing to Wigan last season in the final I can see them looking to repair that damage with a win at Wembley in May.

So my first prediction comes for Manchester City to win and Over 3.5 goals scored in the match. The other is purely based on the term FA Cup fever with both teams to score and for Manchester City to win the game.
